Lots more wasted space, lower contrast (bad enough that Google Chrome’s Lighthouse tools’ Accessibility test complains), and, most importantly, too dang hard to find new discussions. Big step backward.

Do you use the Boeshield T-9 Bicycle Chain Waterproof Lubricant and Rust Protection on your chain, too?
No, I use traditional lubricants there. T-9 is nice in part because it continues to add protection even after it seems to have dried or washed off, leaving the metal looking and feeling completely clean and normal. I don’t care how nasty my chain seems, and since new chains come pre-lubricated and T-9 should go on bare metal, it’d be a real hassle to even try it on a chain.
peterw_diyParticipantBefore it gets nasty, wash the bike and protect all the ferrous metal nuts & bolts & springs & things with something like Boeshield T-9 so that it’s not as critical to clean the briny water off.

even though the new release above states that Beach Drive and Ross Drive may be closed between 6:45 pm and 4 am, yesterday (11/28) both roads (along with Ridge Road) were closed before 5:45 pm
They’ve updated their website to say closures could start as early as 5pm. They still say closures could last until 4am.

Actually, the current Holmes Run Trail closure is near the railroad and Metro underpasses. These are closest to the Eisenhower Avenue underpass.
Yes! Sorry!

I talked to one of the contractors who said they hoped to pour concrete today.
They definitely were. Kudos to you for off-roading it — it didn’t look viable for my skinny tires and road cleats.
Do you know more about why they’re not bothering to change the profile of the trail? This is close to stream level and seems frequently be covered with silt that’s washed over the trail. Seems suboptimal to just rebuild the trail at the same level…
peterw_diyParticipantAlexandria: Holmes Run Trail is closed at the Telegraph Road underpass where crews are replacing large sections of the concrete. I expect this will likely be passable in as couple days but right now it’s not.

We need these around here.

I’ve had trouble, too. The other day, I needed a bike at Langston Blvd and N Woodstock St., but there were zero bikes there. I went down the hill to W&L High School, but there were zero bikes there.
I tweeted at Cabi, and they replied with cheery gratefulness that I’d helped them out. They said they’d notify their rebalancing team.
I think the reply was more PR than action.
Absolutely. They don’t need random people tweeting at them to identify empty stations. They’ve had good realtime system data for years … data that shows 46 CaBi stations currently have zero bikes of either type available.

peterw_diyParticipantRegarding food, there were bananas today. I expect the bananas are likely from Amazon, as there also was a Community Banana Stand set up a little further south on Crystal Drive.
peterw_diyParticipantThanks, Steve, for posting. I wandered up that way not long ago and was a little disappointed not to see lots of BTWD/BTWW signage around the old Crystal City site. I’m glad to hear that for the most part it’s just been moved.

In that case the stupid is just painful. (In fairfax they generally blame the utility trucks.)
This photo is from July 1, first day of the fiscal year, more than a month after the City learned of the bridge damage. That’s a City trash truck driving into the 4MR trail from Edison St.

Like, if the police or telco or whoever tear up the trail, why don’t the costs come out of their budget?
In this situation I think it’s likely that the biggest culprit IS the parks department, which relies on heavy, full-size trash trucks to collect from the few cans located on Alexandria‘a trail. Sure, police drive the trail more often, but a mid size SUV with one occupant and a little gear must be much lighter than a compacting trash truck.
My question is, why doesn’t Alexandria put aside “rainy day” money to expedite infrastructure repairs. And it’s not just small infrastructure – just yesterday ArlCo+Alx announced new capacity reductions on the W Glebe bridge over 4MR that was identified as unsafe back in 2018. Seems like each time we act surprised and have to wait for the next budget cycle to do anything more than erect barricades.

Closed for several years, then, evidently.
Not necessarily — we’re in FY 2022 now and FY 2023 begins next July. If the City is willing & able to spend money on design before FY 2023, we could be looking at “just” one year of complete closure. If they’re making a request they must at least have a ballpark estimate for replacement cost; anybody know what the estimated cost is? And if they will spend money on design work this fiscal year?
More good news for folks on bikes: the City seems to be mowing “shoulders” beside the wetland path now, which makes it feel less cramped (though also less natural). There’s enough light from Arlington across 4 Mile Run that cheap “city” lights are generally adequate after dark although, as I’ve noted, some Recreation and Police staff seem to think the 10pm citywide park closing time also applies to the paved paths inside 4MR park.
