We can take rejection!
There is a pretty good chance the next one will be in Shirlington and we have held them in Rosslyn as well. Maybe we can provide you more notice for one of those.
Since most of us work near the city and then scatter in all directions in the evening, why don’t we have a happy hour in a central location say, say downtown, G-town, or Crystal city, a little earlier say 4-6, and then let people scatter. Friday coffee club works pretty well with this model (I’ve met people from all over at Swings on Fridays). Just Sayin’

As every engineer learned in the first semester of structural analysis (aka statics), you can’t push a rope!
As a bureaucrat, I regularly find opportunities to try (typically with known results).
Sure you can, you just have to dip it in water and freeze it first.

The clamp on the rack is awesome. Do you know if they are easy to find and apply to other trailer bikes? My wife’s bike doesn’t have enough visible seat post for our current clamp, plus the rack gets in the way.
I bought this off of craigs list so I can’t speak to the ease of modification but this bike is an Adams Tandem Trailer bike modified for a Burley rack. It is very stable (no lateral wobble at all unlike many seat-post mounts. Plus it has a nice 2 way axial/radial joint: When we go over speed bumps I can’t even feel when the 3rd wheel clears. I’ll be happy to show it to you at Coyote’s.

ParticipantRoads cost money to repair, heavy trucks do the most damage to roads, they should pay.
Bike trails need repair too, mostly from those darn tree roots. I say we tax those maples, elms, and poplars that are rutting our dear trail network. Oh and don’t get me started on the gophers!

That’s a good Idea, if you can get to a bus stop where multiple lines run, you can basically just go there and not worry about timing, since the busses will run about every 10 minutes or so. I ride a little further to where the 17K and 17H share a bus stop, if I miss the K by a minute I only have to wait 8 minutes for the H. very convenient.

I also live off Braddock and do the 17 lines with my bike on days I don’t have to drive into Old Town first (my usual bike start) and then ride from the Pentagon to downtown. What route do you take on days you ride all the way in?
I live over near GMU, I cross campus, take University and Old Lee Highway across downtown to the FFX Circle. I then cut up through the East Blake Lane Park by the Vienna Metro, stay on Vaden through to Nottoway park and right onto Tapawingo. I cross Vienna on Tapawingo Right on Glynndon, Left of Adahi and Right on the W&OD. I take the W&OD to the Custis to the MVT then across the 14th street bridge. I do it about twice a week, let me know if you want me to meet you somewhere on the way, we can ride it together.

ParticipantGreetings,
My story is fairly similar to yours. I live in Fairfax off of Braddock Road, and I commute each day by bike to the NAVY Yard. I had ridden both ways about once a month for nearly a year before I took the plunge and gave up my car commute last March. When I stopped driving to work I originally commuted by VRE/CaBi. I rode my bike to the Burke Centre Station, locked it up, hopped on the commuter rail to L’Enfant, then picked up a CaBi bike to ride to the Navy Yard Metro station. This worked great since even in CaBi’s infancy there were plenty of bikes and docks, and if they were empty in the morning I would just stay on the train to Union Station and pick up a bike there. For the reverse trip I would check the CaBi tracker website to see where there were more docks and ride to that station. I would even ride over to crystal city for days where I wanted a little more exercise. On days that I would have to leave early I would ride to the Vienna Metro station and lock my bike there. I would still ride all the way in about every month for the fun of it.
When the federal employee commuter benefit was cut from $230 to $125 I switched over to the Metrobus. I ride my bike to one of 3 bus stops within a mile of my house that allows me to catch either the 17K, 17G, or 17H express bus (with this flexibility a bus is avaiable nearly every 10-15 minutes which is better than the 40 minutes between VRE trains). I load my bike on the front of the bus and take this bus to the pentagon, then with my bike ride the 5 miles from the Pentagon to the Navy Yard. Most days the entire trip door to door takes about 1:15-1:25 minutes depending on traffic. The nice thing about the bus is that I have a way to transport my bike back home without huffing it all the way up the Custis/W&OD, so I can ride my bike all the way in during the morning commute, and take the bus home in the afternoon (a necessity during the +90F degree days of July and August).
Annandale is tough, not much bike infrastructure. I can probably help with routes, if you have any questions.
Welcome to the addiction!

ParticipantHuzzah to the A-team!
You guys are really giving us killer B’s a run for it this month. Great to see so many local teams doing so great.

ParticipantI forgot, you could also ride down the MVT to Alexandria, catch the 29K bus at Royal and Pendelton streets. The 29K will drop you off right infront of the restaruant, you could take this as a return trip to Alexandria.
Bike on Metro bus = cheap and easy! I’ll leave the Cheap and Easy jokes up to you.

ParticipantIf riding all the way out to Fairfax City seems Like FAR-Fax City; too far or too time consuming here are some biking/transit alternatives:
Bike to Pentagon (MVT to humpback bridge, under west portal around marina and LBJ park, then left on Boundary Channel, Right on connector road, takes you to the PNG transit station (metrorail/bus).
Take 29X or 29E bus (annandale line) to Little River Turnpike near Olley road. Ride west 2.5 miles down LRT toward FFX city, the restaurant is on the right just before you hit downtown. (bus will take around 30-40 minutes, ride should take 15)
Take 17G bus to George Mason University (along chain bridge road VA-123) Take 123 north to downtown FFX, then right on Main street, restaruant is ahead on left. (bus will take around 50-60 minutes, ride will take around 5)
Return Trip: Ride out Olde Lee Highway to Fairfax circle, then Lee highway to Circle Towers, turn left at the light just after Pickett/Blake road, then down the wooded East Blake Lane Trail to the Vienna Metro (if after 7 take bike on metro for trip back to the city.)
Driving out to FFX at rush hour could take 90+ minutes, and wil make you very sad/angry especially if you usually bike commute home. But if you insist, 395 to 495, to little river turnpike, take LRT west, it will become Main street, Coyote Grille is ahead (6-7 miles) on right. Or I-66 west from ARL (with a friend since HOV-2) till 6:30 to Nutley Street (south) Turn right at Lee highway to FFX circle, then Old Lee Highway to downtown, Coyotee grille is in Wallgreens/Ace hardware shopping center on left across from the FFX City Library.
See you there!

ParticipantCount me in, I think I can get the family to join as well — All on bike.
Here is how I commute from FFX thru Arlington to DC. MVT – Custis — W&OD out to Adahi (first left after Cedar crossing) Left on Adahi, Right on Glynndon, Left on Tapawingo, take Tapawingo to it’s end (just past light with Nutley) Take trail ahead into the woods and turn left (Nottaway Park) follow the trail to a cul-de-sac (Vaden Street) Follow Vaden past the Metro station then follow the trail on the right side into the woods (East Blake Park) to where the trail drops you out at the circle towers and Lee Highway. Cross the street, up on the left is the continuation of the trail which leads to the intersection of Pickett and Fairfax, blvd. Cross to the left and follow Picket to right on Old Picket, to Left on Old Lee, up the hill to FFX city. Coyote grill is in the Walgreens shopping center near the corner of Old Lee/ and Main street. (The enterance is on the left across the street from the public library.) There are probably other ways to go but this works for me.

ParticipantI think the coastal flooding is due to unusually high tide (darn moon!) and upstream flooding from taking its sweet time to get down river (darn West Virginia).

ParticipantRemeber the weather forecasts for Friday were very dire, I think many people didn’t bike in for fear of not being able to bike home. I usually do 50 miles on friday but had to cut my afternoon short because of the Stormmageddon (R). Maybe people on Saturday woke up and their houses were entirely surrounded by water and could only bike in circles for so long before they got bored.
Makes me think, “What would Piglet do?”
