This is the route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1303020. It is about 12 miles each way. It does use some of Old Lee Highway which has a fair amount of traffic on it. The shoulders are pretty good. There’s a short section of gravel trail to get to the CCT. I ride it regularly on my road bike and have never had a problem.

    Dirt!

Isn’t there also a staircase to get from that short stretch of trail to Holly Berry Dr?

All you need is a lot of momentum to make it up and down that staircase. ;)

There are about 20 steps that need to be traversed. They’re not bad though. I walk up and down them 4 or 5 times per week as I cruise around.

I liked encountering the staircase –15 seconds of pretending I was in a cyclocross.

I’m awesome at those cyclocross dismount/run/remount moves…. in my own mind. In reality? not so much. It was definitely a weak point for me when I raced cross…. 25-30 years ago.

I dropped by the Department of Transportation in Fairfax County today and picked up a dozen FFX County Bike Maps to distribute on Thursday.

But be forewarned. A brand spanking new map is coming out in the next two weeks. So it may make a lovely decoupage project.

Cyclocross dismount = extended time on the ground staring up at the sky watching cloud formations and spitting out pieces of grass while wrestling a metal bike off my legs.

I also have a few tongue tattoo stickers unless I use them all myself before Thursday.

If you have a tat of a cyclist throwing-up over the handlebars that would be perfect for me and I would wear it with pride. Looking forward to meeting the gang.

Trying to convince the family they want to hang out with a bunch of sweaty, lycra-clad cyclists. Don’t think it’s going to happen.

I’ll be leading a ride out to Happy Hour if y’all want to join. I’ll be rolling from East Falls Church Metro

Oh, figured I should check – what time is the convoy leaving East Falls Church?

Is the meeting point at the trail near the metro station?

The clamp on the rack is awesome. Do you know if they are easy to find and apply to other trailer bikes? My wife’s bike doesn’t have enough visible seat post for our current clamp, plus the rack gets in the way.

I bought this off of craigs list so I can’t speak to the ease of modification but this bike is an Adams Tandem Trailer bike modified for a Burley rack. It is very stable (no lateral wobble at all unlike many seat-post mounts. Plus it has a nice 2 way axial/radial joint: When we go over speed bumps I can’t even feel when the 3rd wheel clears. I’ll be happy to show it to you at Coyote’s.

Behold! Bike Stickers! Six of them have special messages written on the back telling the bearer they are WINNERS! But aren’t we all? After all, we ride bikes. We are exercising our bodies and cutting down on car emissions.

I am looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing my old acquaintances! My cowboy boots are ready, the margarita machine will be fired up, and the patio will open at 5:30 sharp. Many thanks to Dirt for coming out and leading folks. It’s always a great time when Dirt’s in the house.

And remember, be safe. Have lights for the trip home. It’s hot so be smart and bring at least a water bottle or two. If worse comes to worse, I’ll have my SUV with me in case you decide riding home is a bad idea.
