I registered for the forum today because I couldn’t resist chiming in on this thread (and it’s a great forum, generally!). I only started commuting (Falls Church to Vienna) in September, but this morning was my first commute on my brand new Cannondale Quick. It added 1.5 mph to my average speed, and knocked a couple minutes off my travel time. Magical! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s ride!
Pictures, man, we need pictures!

ParticipantHomeless Guy was back out in his usual spot under the 4MRT bridges tonight – he’s got a black sleeping bag now so he’s extra tricky to see.

ParticipantI’m planning to be there if I can manage to wake up at the right time! (I’m working 10-7 this week and it is making me most confused.)

ParticipantIt was surprisingly toasty this morning – I stopped before the 14th St bridge to take off my beanie & glove liners. Hopefully it stays warm tonight as I’ll be riding back late.
I had a squirrel bounce off my spokes which was a bit exciting… three of them ran across the path at the same time and I decided holding my line was the best plan of survival.

I don’t think you don’t get the hard stuff until after the ride.
I don’t think I don’t get the hard stuff till after the ride too.
That’s what flask holders are for!

ParticipantI’m signed up for the Honeycrisp
I figure if I drink enough cider I won’t notice the 60 miles.

My thought is that regardless of whether you’re currently equipped to walk from the car/bus to your office, that has nothing to do with being dressed for winter cycling at speed. The big factor is the windchill, and if you screw this up you’re risking some serious issues on a long suburban commute.
This exactly.
I a) don’t own enough warm regular clothes to ride my bike in them and b) don’t feel like dying of hypothermia on Gravelly Point on the way home. Riding a couple of miles in the city even if it’s 20 degrees out is way different than riding 10 or 20 on a dark trail where your bailout points are 5 miles apart.
(Because in KelWorld it is colder when it is dark out.)

Swung by Wednesday Coffee Club but didn’t have time to actually stop for coffee – saw somebody’s bike outside so I hope you were eating delicious scones

Rule 9 made me laught. I had a front mounted light and then two rear blinkies (one on bike and one on helmet). My failure? The correct number is L+1. Of course the mounted light decided to totally crap out and the battery is toasted. L+1 failure on my part.
I had FOUR lights fail on a ride last winter. Made it home on the dregs of a Spok light
(Which reminds me, I gotta get some more lights!)

Well I’m not Glenn Danzig, I can tell you that right now. Or maybe I am.
Nah, I’ve seen you. You’re taller than Danzig.
