1/8/21 – Bell (but not on a bike) OR an Elvis
January 8 is Elvis Presley’s birthday. What were at the bottom of his jumpsuits? Bells! Post a pic of a bell that isn’t on a bike OR an Elvis you spot on your ride (just 1 pic please). Happy hunting!
Josh – the only acceptable answer from you (and only you) is the Liberty Bell since you left us to go to Philly
These bells are in the tower at St. John Neumann Catholic Church right next to my house. True story: When we first bought this house I was outside talking to a neighbor one day when the bells began ringing. I exclaimed, “Oh, they’re wonderful!” The neighbor scrunched up her face and said, “You may think so but there was a lawsuit because people thought they were too loud and too much!” I find that so sad after living in Europe where church bells are ubiquitous. I wonder how those people would feel with a Muslim call to prayer 5 times a day?

Hi! My name is Karen – happy to meet some of you tonight! I’m a bit of a weekend tourist rider – but will try to pick up my game for this competition – if you have any suggestions for routes / places to visit? I just bought a cool 1980s road bike – my first bike that was not from the tip or a real budget third- or fourth-hand mountain bike, so keen to try it out.
Karen I would love to show you the area out here in the Reston/Herndon zone that can build on your Udvar-Hazy trips. That said, it’s a time sink to get out here from DC, so do try to ride around the city even a little bit each day. It adds up for your health and sanity! Feel free to contact me privately for more routes/ideas or to plan a riding trip together. westenhoff at gmail dot com (Same for any other team member who wants to get in touch) Or you can text me 571-215-5353 – just let me know who you are the first time you do.

Hey all, I’m Robyne. Enjoyed seeing and meeting most of you at the HH today. I’m especially looking forward to getting full strength back in my leg and climbing some gravel hills! And, I have a brand new mountain bike with just 20 miles on it before a driver decided to occupy the space I was in. I had no skillz before but am really anxious to get back at it soon.

I’m awed that you’re back at it so quickly and determinedly (is that a word?). Look forward to riding with you – we’re not too far apart geographically.

Hi everyone, I’m so excited that so many of you are playing the Civil War Marker and Street game with such enthusiasm!
Please make sure you are using the hashtags #civilwarmarker and #civilwarstreet ON STRAVA in your title. In your ride description or photo comment, please describe the marker or street as discussed in detail in the rules. I’ve seen a few people not describe the photo on Strava or not even identify which photo the marker is in. Sometimes it’s not obvious when there are many pics.
Sharing your finds on this thread is great fun, but it doesn’t count for points for the game.
Beth
I haven’t done this on Strava, so my markers won’t count. I don’t use Strava except for Freezing Saddles so most of it is a mystery to me, and frankly not worth dealing with the details. Rather than clog this space, I’ll not do any more Civil War Markers. Thanks for sponsoring this, but I’m done. It’s more work than fun at this point.

ParticipantMissed you at the happy hour tonight. I was a big Pete Beers fan, so we have that connection. Just need to know how to sign up for our strava team. I’m not a strava user except for this event.
To intro myself, I live/work in Reston. When it’s possible, I teach biking skills to people of all ages. I’m also a licensed atty in VA so I use that for advocacy and forward thinking. I’m an exec committee member of Reston Bike Club and work very hard to bring biking people and others together. In 2016 I rode across the country from Seattle to DC. It’s been 5 years – looking for my next challenge. I did commit to riding an average of 20 miles per day for 2021. So far, so good.

ParticipantExplored places I’d never known about today — and got to see the recently reopened Benjamin Banneker park in Falls Church near the Metro. It was FULL of kids having a glorious time. They’ve done a very nice job!
And Cora Kelley park was great — they know how to spell Kelley correctly!

Took a little spin to a park outside Mechelen, the Vrijbroekpark. Nice paved trail inside the park, and a wonderful country roads and bike path route to/from.

I like how your bike accent colors compliment the sign. Almost as if you planned it!

A wormhole that many pass, but few pass through. This wormhole connects Mill Road (near the Carlyle area in Alexandria to Duke Street. This wormhole has steps on both ends and a water feature in the middle of the tunnel. There is hope that someday this tunnel will be improved and likely lose its status of a a wormhole. I just went over to Google Maps to get a better sense of where it is and guess what — it has a MARKER on Google Maps! Looks like a great wormy kind of hole!

Temporary (for a long time) wormhole on Chain Bridge Rd near Tyson’s. I call it the Construction Wormhole.
On the map, it looks like a road, but it’s closed off by concrete barricades and typically a parking lot for construction workers.
A great way to enter/exit Tyson’s (and now ride to Wegman’s.
Link to location on Google Map
And a photo from this morning. Always looks like a traffic jam there
Love the connection. Don’t love that they’re parked in a bike lane. Don’t love that ever, even if the road doesn’t actually go through!

Looks like they need to co-brand with Bikenetic! By the way, I’m loving all these future ‘coffeeneuring’ destinations!

ParticipantThese are my new favorites. They say “Surly” on the top (to match my Straggler), but that’s not the important part. The fact that they’re warm wool is … and the laugh out loud moment when I read this on them the first time. It still makes me smile every time I pull them on.
