This challenge sounds great. We’re forgetting the most important part though – what Pointless Prize will the winners get?

    Maybe copies of this:

As a Capitol Hill resident, I am proud that our street grid is a good palette :).

Hang on, only 2571 CitiBike rides during a snowstorm? On the 21st when we got 4+ inches, Capital Bikeshare had almost 1,800 rides. That’s pretty darn good considering Citibike is 2.5 times bigger than Bikeshare.

I’ll do some fancy math. So during a snowstorm, DC had 0.72 rides/bike, and NY had 0.43. After applying advanced hedonic regression techniques, and after controlling for the phase of the moon and sunspots, (aka (72/43)-1), I conclude that D.C. residents are 68% tougher than New Yorkers for cold-weather biking.

Maybe the Leesburg Loop? Go out MacArthur Blvd to River Road (or take the C&O for some/all of it), cross at White’s Ferry, through Leesburg and down the W&OD to home. Or the same thing in reverse.

I did some exhaustive and highly sophisticated market segment analysis, and I’ve concluded this graph divides us neatly into two groups. I added some labels.

At W&OD mile 0, crossing S Shirlington Road and Four Mile Run Dr. The beg-button for the HAWK signal doesn’t seem to work (last I checked).

Also, 50 feet away, how about a big Leading Pedestrian Interval for the stoplights controlling the intersection of S. Shirlington and Four Mile Run Dr? I’ve seen alot of near-hooks there from drivers who don’t appear to believe they need to yield to the crosswalk. Light phasing changes, or signs, might go a long way.

So my bike commute is down to 0.9 miles in, 0.9 miles out. I guess I better do some loop-de-loops to get over 2.0 so every day isn’t counted as sleaze for me :).

Hozn, how are runs and walks handled? Okay to put those on Strava and they’re excluded?

I’ve been advised by folks I know to avoid biking through SE DC and the on road routes don’t seem very bike friendly on that side of the river

I disagree, I think the route on the SE DC side is no worse than anywhere else in the city. Oxon Hill Farm is a hidden gem. But it is hillier than the MVT. Here is my preferred route through to the Wilson bridge/National Harbor: http://www.strava.com/activities/102794104

After a lot of miles in 2013 (nearly half of which were in the first 3 months of the year, thanks Freezing Saddles), my goal for 2014 isn’t mileage-related.

My goal for next year is to figure out a fun, safe way to bike with my new son in our daily routine. And, once we’ve figured it out, to ride every day, including some weekend outings. The whole “kid on bike” thing is a little intimidating to me – so many options and new things – but all this walking everywhere is kinda making me crazy with its slowness.

My second goal is to get on a bike nearly every day. Even if it’s just a short CaBi hop.

    Happy new year!

I tried the new light the other day, and it worked really, really well. Both lanes of traffic came to a quick halt. I was really impressed and felt MUCH safer. Well done, NPS! Let’s keep them in for awhile.

I’ll take responsibility for the “Liar Liar Pants on Fire” prize for the biggest sandbagger – person who surpasses their “normal” handicap by the biggest margin. (Maybe Dismal will join me?)
