For TR Bridge users, a Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail volunteer cleared most of the overgrowth tonight.

If you think that’s rad, please help improve the trail by volunteering at mountvernontrail.org/events or by donating at mountvernontrail.org/donate

Not quite near the airport but I have rented from Wheel Works in Winter Garden. They have a variety of different bike types and are located right on the West Orange Trail which is one of my favorite trails. Their website is at https://www.wgwheelworks.com/articles/rentals-pg90.htm

I’ve also rented from Spin City Cycles in Apopka which is a very small shop also located near the West Orange Trail. They still have a rental page up but it looks like they maybe are not renting bikes. Website at https://www.spincityapopka.com/rentals

Hope you enjoy your time there. Lots of really good bike trails around Orlando that are rails to trails. If you want to bike with some gators, a loop around Lake Apopka will usually provide the experience.

Looks like Bridge 24 by Belle Haven is almost ready to open.

The was an electronic sign on the north bound Parkway saying the right lane was to be closed for construction starting tomorrow (I think), 8/14. Does that mean they will start the work to replace the Dyke Marsh/MVT wooden walkway (Bridge 23)?

Work should start on Bridge 23 soon. Construction was originally slated to begin in July. There was an issue with a migratory bird nesting underneath the bridge that contributed to a schedule impact.

It was gone by today. badly damaged railing on both sides and one broken deck slat, maybe more. couldn’t tell about damage to the understructure

A few more pictures from FoMVT Twitter: https://twitter.com/MtVernonFriends/status/1690769504454778881?s=20

Will try to get an update on if it needs more extensive repairs than the deck board and railings.

Tree down across MVT south of Trollheim and just before the cement bridge across the canal (where cars often go over and, I think, NPS mowing vehicle slip). Not huge and you can go around, but that means up the steep hill. Luckily there is currently grass there, but likely to get torn up and muddy soon.

Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail conveniently had a scheduled volunteer event in Rosslyn tonight and were able to pop down the trail to clear this tree. Thanks for the report DrP. We otherwise would have tried to go that way with a fully loaded bike trailer and getting around it would have been doable but difficult.

For those of us who don’t have the super-decoder ring for bridge numbers on the MVT, can you tell us exactly where “Bridge 15” is?

    It’s between Bridge 14 and Bridge 16. :P

It’s the bridge between Collingwood and Waynewood. It can be bypassed by taking Boulevard. The tree currently extends to the edge of the Parkway so, best to hop on Boulevard instead of darting into the Parkway briefly.

Custis Trail is now clear of all the fallen trees between Rosslyn and W&OD. Thank you, Arlington!

MVT is now clear from Rosslyn to Humpback bridge (as far as I went today). Thank you, Friends of the MVT! (and Maybe NPS too! It wasn’t 100% clear from Judd’s message if the Trollheim tree that was cleared out of the way was just the Friends or if NPS did more, but it is clear.)

So much faster to get through all this than Sunday at 8:30am – and great that I didn’t have to lift my work-pannier loaded bike over things).

All Friends of MVT this time. NPS was working to get the north Parkway reopened. NPS reported 250-325 trees needed work that required 100 dump truck loads. We had volunteers ride the trail Sunday and remove stuff. Mostly clear now, except for Bridge 15. A very large tree fell across it today and it is currently taped off. Extent of damage won’t be known until the tree is removed.

Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail cleared multiple downed trees off Trollheim and one between 14th St Bridge and Gravelly Point tonight. There’s a tree leaning on Trollheim that’s passable but will probably require NPS to take care of.

A little bit more before and after to show the difference after pressure washing. Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail will be out tomorrow morning at Trollheim trimming some honeysuckle away from the north side of the bridge. We could use some more help. The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail pressure washed the intersection of Trollheim and ramp to the TR Bridge this morning. We did a total of three passes with the pressure washer. Picture below shows the difference between dirty (on the left) and washed (on the right). A big thank you to volunteers who cleared invasive honeysuckle around Trollheim this year. Not only has it prevented a lot of vegetation growth into the bridge but it also made it possible to run the hose from NPS’ pressure washer and reach the bridge. If you’d like to help improve the Mount Vernon Trail, register for an upcoming volunteer event at mountvernontrail.org/events

I still space out about 50% of the time and start heading down the detour route before turning back around.

For folks going westbound that may be less frequent users, it is much less obvious that the underpass is open. Signage for the detour is still up. I probably would have detoured out of habit this morning if not for the forum.

Bikes Unlimited rents Burley trailers for $12 an hour or $36 per day. Not sure if there’s any restrictions on using them for a dog or a requirement that you’re renting a bike from them.

Last night on my bike ride home I was very lucky that my (new) brakes saved me from a head-on collision with a car. I was riding in the bike lane at the Georgetown Waterfront (see screenshot) when a car quickly drove into the bike lane and completely blocked it right where I was going, presumably to save a parking spot. The protection for bikes there is not good. I took a photo of his license plate and would like to make those who can put better protection for bikes there aware of the very dangerous situation.

Do you know who I should contact? I am thinking of the police, but maybe you have better advice.

Greg Billing is the Georgetown BID transportation director. They’ve had some success with getting stuff done.
