I’m in! Will the falafel sandwiches be vegan once again?

I’d like to put out a call for someone to help me learn some of these, and then we can film each other’s stunts. PM me or comment here if you’re interested (will buy beer in exchange for teaching).

As Dread Pirate rcannon100 (I’ve heard he even dresses up as a sea captain), I’ll be offering a pointless prize for the winner of Calvinball (thread upcoming). There will possibly (probably) be multiple winners in different categories.

I don’t know if the answer to this question matters considering that you have ruled consularrider ineligible to win, but does “as many DIFFERENT LOCAL, i.e., DMV, coffee places as possible” mean that visiting a new, non-Starbucks location on bike that’s outside of DC, Virginia and Maryland (or is the DMV area smaller?) not count? This is assuming of course you haven’t already visited it if it has multiple locations.

This may be a commuter perception vs someone riding through recreationally. For commuters going through at rush hour, US-29 is probably terrible for crossing like other busy roads, whereas for recreational riders, navigating through EFC and Banneker park are a challenge with the trail gap and limited signage.

Chris is right – the new bridge is just a way to avoid crossing the street at grade. However, many of us would like to see a bridge on the W&OD from approx. the EFC Metro to East Falls Church Park (i.e. over Sycamore Street and the I66 on ramp) so that cyclists can avoid the EFC neighborhood and Benjamin Bannaker Park altogether.

I agree that the signage could be better, but I’m not clear what you and dasgeh are suggesting (possibly because I’m not even sure of what the official route through the neighborhood is). Headed westbound, I generally take a right after going by Brandymore Castle, go under Sycamore, head all the way to Van Buren, take a right and go north, then a left onto Westmoreland, right on Washington, and then a left back onto the trail/sidewalk depending on traffic. The last part is a “shortcut” FFG showed me, but I think the most common approach is to take Van Buren north to 19th, then a left followed by a quick right to get back on the W&OD (and then the 29 crossing). Where would a bridge be needed there? You already don’t need to cross Sycamore (at grade) or 66. I’m having trouble imagining a bridge over an entire neighborhood (this is a bike trail, not a monstrosity of a car freeway or something).

Missed you yesterday, Judd. It was rough in that beer desert out there, but I survived. Reji and fxbooks made it out to watch, and there was the three-way duel between rcannon100/sjclaeys/SteveO. What’s your excuse?

I am now the proud owner of an SE Lager which I bought from huskerdont today. Love the polished finish on it. It’s my first time riding on bullhorn handle bars and the first time riding single speed. I had my third fastest time going up the incline to my house on the way home. My brain made me reach for a non existent shifter multiple times.

Now you just need to swap out that freewheel for a fixed cog.

I’d prefer the Thursday the 10th. Might as well stay late (happy 4+ hours), and I’d rather do that on a Thursday than a Monday.

Uh-oh, I just re-registered for BAFS 2018. I saw a submit button and just had to click it. Sorry!

On the feedback side, shouldn’t the placeholder text for the miles ridden in BAFS 2018 be “Miles in Freezing Saddles 2018” rather than “Miles in Freezing Saddles 2017”? Also, I’m torn on whether I should help teach self-driving cars via reCAPTCHA.

Took the Custis and W&OD from Ballston to Herndon-ish this morning, was slow going but not sketchy at all, just wet snow. Curious what it’ll look like in the evening.

I’ll see you all at 9 tomorrow for Veterans Day MMPC. Any earlier I probably can’t make it.

The side path along Shreve Rd between the cement factory and Lazy Mike’s has been totally repaved. I used to be reluctant to ride that, since it was a rough and slightly dangerous mess of broken up blacktop, but now it’s a dream to ride, and a lot less stressful than taking the lane on Shreve. For those who go to Monday pancakes by way of the W&OD eastbound, it would be a pleasant way to go.

As pleasant as it could be going to Lazy Mike’s, am I right?

But really, I’m just bitter a worker waved a concrete mixer right into my lane when they were doing construction one Monday morning.
