ParticipantBummer, obscure… . I will simply know that I have ~50 more freeze than tabulated – instead of being #144 as of this writing, I know I am truly # 128!
As for teams, I will reconsider, if only that I can continue to see my freeze points, to which I have taken a liking this go around, I do find that the “competition” brings out my competitive nature and makes me want to ride more, but not necessarily in a good way. That has happened to some extent with freeze points as I have done some night rides for the sole purpose of taking advantage of sub-30 temps. But, I do feel that is getting into the spirit of the event.

ParticipantHuge thumbs up for the bar mitts – when I ride I find myself using my thin gloves and not my thick “go outside in the cold” gloves. I also use toe covers for my shoes. For my head I use a buff for neck and head and a Hikenture brand helmet liner. In previous seasons I have used ear covers – the kind that attach to helmet straps – but for 25 degrees the buff and liner are perfectly fine.
As far as the rest of my body, two layers on the legs – the usual cycling leggings with termal underwear over them, as the outside layer. Up top, however many layers I think I need, starting with merino will long sleeves as the base layer, and my windbreaker as the outer layer.

ParticipantI can offer a broken derailleur as the reward, with the added imprimatur that when it broke I converted my bike in the field to a single speed bike which was functional for over a mile, back to a point with car access. Furthermore, that experience enabled me to convert someone else’s bike to a single speed, again in the field, and I later heard he rode that bike successfully for the remaining 130 miles of his C&O Towpath ride!

Remember, when it’s super windy on Hains Point, you get the tailwind one way so it evens out
On each lap my legs remember the brutal and are too tired to appreciate the tailwind.
The next-to-last time I was out there, yes, brutal on the Potomac side!

Hi, everyone. I’ve just disappeared off the team and individual leaderboards. I was on the lists this morning, and I have not ridden today. I see nothing amiss with my Strava account, and it shows that I am still a member of FS 2023 and of BAFS 2023 Snow Good Cyclists. The team leaderboard now shows my team as having 9 instead of 10 riders.

Problem went away, four hours later. Odd, 4 people got dropped, then at one point 3 were back in and only I was still out, then finally I am back.

The penguins are coming off the ice flow and doing the Arlington Loop. Starting at 1 pm, Saturday, 1/28, from Shirlington, clockwise. I’ll meander from East Falls Church Metro about 12:20 to the meeting start, across from Busboys & Poets. All are welcome. Look for the penguin jersey.
Laura, I hope to make it but no guarantees. If I can, where does one park in Shirlington, please? I’ve only ridden the loop from Roosevelt island.

ParticipantOK, I’m an intelligent guy but I can’t read, apparently. I reread or read the rules and a) miles in a day is what matters, and b) can ride anywhere, in any climate.

ParticipantTwo questions! First, does location count? Metro area, cold climate, etc? I am not going anywhere
so I won’t be riding in a warm locale this winter, but in principle is there a restriction? (For that matter, a strict interpretation of the theme of this event would suggest that none of our rides on this balmy New Years should count!
Second, does the calculation mechanism account for multiple rides in a day? I will on occasion do a ride with my daughter and then later (or earlier) do a solo ride? Seems unfair to restart the point count at 10 for the first mile twice in one day. I presume the calc works on daily total miles but am just checking.
Have a great day, all!

ParticipantHi, everyone, I’m new to FS. I bike almost exclusively on paths – exceptions are things like the Alexandria stretch on the Mt. Vernon, Hains Point, local residential streets, that sort of thing. I range widely on my day trips and have ridden to Meyersdale on the GAP and so forth. This spring I will get up to York PA and Everett PA, and maybe later in the year do something like Morgantown WV or the Creeper. Looking forward to this!
