1/4 mural on MBT NE DC. I watched part of it be painted and the artist came back the next day to paint over where it had been tagged. Anyone know why some murals are tagged and others left alone?

1/6 Cloud Rain by Kyungmi Shin at Brookland Middle School/Turkey Thicket NE DC
The description is pretty cool about how it lights up, though since I arrived before the storm I can’t verify if the lights change with different water levels: “This shade structure is an abstraction of cloud and rain. It features 6 circular disks cut with words describing the various states of water in the water cycle. Each disk is supported by a slanted column mimicking the raindrops by its angle and the LED lights embedded in the column. The LED light is controlled by the water tank level gauge and functions as an indicator for the storm water level in the storage tank located underneath the artwork site.” (From https://www.shingraystudio.com/cloud-rain)

Twirling in the breeze. Mesmerizing. Video clip in Strava, longer video by artist https://www.howeart.net/shindahiku-fern-pull in a much greener location than it is currently. Looks so organic in motion.

Is there a leaderboard for the kids this year?
There is! It looks like it still works from previous years if you scroll down the “pointless” data tracking tab.
As of post-bedtime 1/2/24 there are 3 kids currently in the competition for riding under their own power:
https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/pointlesskids2 adults riding with kids:
https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/hashtag/withkidI don’t think anyone’s tagged a #kidical ride transporting kids on their bike yet, but I think they should show up here:
https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/kidmilesOne key part of taking a kid somewhere and dropping them off is remembering to stop the Strava to tag them on their part of the ride and then *restart* it again to capture the rest of your ride. Nothing like riding a bunch of miles and realizing that you forgot to hit start again.

Sometimes public art is flashy and in your face. Other times it’s as simple as a sprinkling of stars marking the path forward under a flying V of geese.

Participant1/2/24 aging

Apart from his whitened hair, this Santa is showing relatively few signs of aging, despite his 1,700+ years in existence. The elephant shows some signs of wrinkling (though humans typically determine elephant age by teeth). The National Institute on Aging actually funds elephant research. Elephants and humans have similar lifespans, despite elephants’ lack of modern medical and dental care as well as sanitation systems, at least as we know them. Elephants also differ from humans in that they have about 20 copies of a gene called TP53 while we and most other mammals just have one. This gene helps detect DNA damage and elephants’ abundance of the gene is thought to protect them against developing cancer.
