Just rode over it for the first time. I had on idea, and on reflecting, it seemed like the only possible name.
It does not. I asked VDOT about the this and it is a complex process involving the Commonwealth Transportation Board acting on behalf of a local jurisdiction’s request to name something. Said jurisdiction must first agree to pay for all signage, too.
This would likely need buy-in from the NVRPA.
I also suggest starting with any surviving family members to make sure they are ok with it.
Here is the reply I got from Heidi Mitter at VDOT:
Hi Henry,So far, it seems possible to name the bridge – but VDOT treats bike/ped facility naming the same as highway naming, with a process that requires locality support, funding of naming expenses, and CTB approval. Find the webpage link below with further details.
I still need to ask NOVA parks for their resolution on facility naming. If this moves forward, we’d need to figure out what role that would play. I’m also guessing that Leah/other County staff would be good to consult with. The commemorative namings of VDOT transportation facilities needs a county resolution supporting/requesting it to the CTB. More information can be found here: http://www.virginiadot.org/info/faq-highway-named.asp
Please be sure to follow the Examples Template for the namings (linked within the above web page) as including certain information and the county agreeing to pay for everything are very important.Happy to talk off-line if there is a desire to proceed.

My membership is set to renew next Wednesday, so at this point I’ve set an alarm to remind myself to just flat out cancel on Tuesday to avoid either of my payment methods being charged. I’ll worry about re-upping with a code on Thursday — thank goodness I don’t actually rely on CaBi to get around.
Admitting this is broken and I’m working with Lyft to fix it, one work-around is to call Customer Service, have them cancel your account, then you can re-register with the code right away.

Next up, I guess, is writing my local jurisdiction so they’re aware (I don’t live in ArlCo, so my particular trouble doesn’t need to be Henry’s concern).
Please do. It will help escalate the priority.

23 actually, since we’re up to 104. And most of them have been in the past 15 months.

Wouldn’t that make them .38 Specials?
(Thanks. I’ll see myself out.)

KeymasterThanks. Add these to the notes.

KeymasterThank you for these postings. I have shared all of this with the Lyft staff who operate the system and regional government staff who oversee them. You are correct. It is poor design compounded by outdated information on the website. We will work to get this fixed.

It’s obvious I gave up some time ago caring what I look like on my bike.

Just to be clear, the exclusion zone fee would theoretically only apply to ebikes locked outside the station. Glad to hear it’s not been charged (at least that I’ve heard).

KeymasterCurious about using the dockless option on CaBi ebikes at the airport. Were you dinged the $25 fee for parking the bike in a exclusion zone?
Henry
KeymasterNot seeing any pictures.

KeymasterI used the post as a de factor “Biker Bar“. There was a desire line in the dirt where people did that before it was paved, so, yes, this is an upgrade.

KeymasterIs this photo confirmation that it is open? Or is this from a previous year?

KeymasterThanks for reporting this. I agree the station should just be gray’d out and not disappear. Will check into it. I know the website map used to have them gray’d out as do other apps that use the public feed.

KeymasterLot’s of things to address here, but quickly:
1) Yes, bike theft from CaBi is a thing that escalated with the introduction of dockless bikes to our market in Oct. 2017. Other factors include increase in “Shake & Take” method success rate with aging stations; and increased Credit Card fraud (which resulted in cell phone authentication last year). Many bikes come back to us after the original use has ended and they are abandoned and reported.
2) CaBi had a couple of staff dedicated to bike recovery in 2018-19, but I don’t know if that task force is still operational, or if those staff were folded back into the rebalancing operations.
3) Don’t have exact numbers, but many bikes were also lost during last summers emergency shut downs during the protests.
4) Yes, please report abandoned bikes. The App is the best tool, but Twitter is another option.
5) There is an equity program that gives users more initial ride time (Capital Bikeshare for All). Please be careful making assumptions about who “looks like” they should have a bike as some of our Community Partners Programs (like Back on My Feet) work directly with the homeless populations.
6) Any REGULAR CaBi bike locked up outside the stations is in violation of the use agreement and should be reported. E-bikes are allowed to be locked away from the stations as long as they are “locked-to” something. You may report “free-locked” e-bikes (i.e. those that simply have the rear cable inserted into the lock, but not locked to anything).
