ParticipantQOTM has been after me for a while to get better sun protection while I am riding. I figured this https://dabrim.com/ might be a good solution. Now that I get around to actually buying it I see that “Air flows freely through helmet vents, promoting cooling” Which seems like a great idea. For folks with hair. But for those of us with male pattern baldness, it would sort of defeat the purpose, allowing me to get a sun burn on my scalp. QOTM had an idea – ride with one of these under my helmet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kippah Honestly though, I’m not THAT religious.
Any other ideas? Something like a cross of da brim and a cycling cap? (No don’t suggest a bandanna, I will likely do a kippah instead of that)
TIA

ParticipantI used to wear a skull cap when I first started biking a lot. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t still wear a cycling cap with the brim.

ParticipantI have a skullcap similar to this which protects my shiny little head from the sun – though I do notice a comfort difference with the thing blocking the airflow through the helmet – nice in the cooler weather, not so nice in the summer. I recently purchased a similar skullcap that has a schmatteh hanging down in the back (more commonly known as a “neck drape”) to add neck protection. I keep meaning to order a Da Brim, but never get around to it. My next-door neighbor swears by it.
Of course, wearing a kipah has its advantages too, as it’s one less thing to pack when you bike to shul. The Bucharian style provides the biggest area of sun protection.

ParticipantI have a Halo brand skullcap. I used to wear it all the time in the warm months, it kept the sun off the top of my head and sweat out of my eyes. I did not find it too warm in the hot months. Now I wear a cycling cap.

So I’ve been asking POTM to get me a Bucharian style kippah for non bike related, but definitely follicle related, reasons, for years now, and after two trips to Israel she has not returned with one. Of course I could probably find one around here or online and buy it myself. Maybe I could find a local Bucharian cycling club?

ParticipantI have both DaBrim models — the visor-only, and the full perimeter brim. Easily interchangeable depending on the sun forecast, and neither cover the helmet cutouts (well, the tightening strap to hold it on my helmet, straddles 2 of the bottom-most cutouts of my helmet.)
I’d think a skull cap (assuming some UV rated fabric) would solve the sunburn-through-helmet-holes. DaBrim will certainly help shade some of your face (the full perimeter model helps with back of the neck coverage) depending on angle of sunlight striking you and how rakishly low you position it. I like the large visor brim on am/pm commutes when the sun is low – the helmet’s ridiculously tiny clip-on visor was no help.
Note, both models will likely give you some grief if you’re on a ride needing maximum aero-efficiency!August 11, 2021 at 8:32 pm #1114555Dewey
ParticipantLike Chris I use DaBrim and a UV skull cap

ParticipantI use a white Headsweats brand cycling cap, and will probably get another soon. They are good at soaking up sweat and more breathable than a traditional cotton cap, and machine washable. They probably make a brimless version you could pair with da Brim.
I know you said no bandanna, but you can just tuck the edge of one under the back of the cap to cover your neck. Sort of like a cycling kepi. I occasionally do this, and use the bandanna to wipe my face and neck when I arrive at my destination and begin sweating profusely. Da Brim still wins for dorkiness, but this combination isn’t too far behind.

ParticipantThis thread pushed me over the brink and I finally bought a Da Brim. I walked into the living room wearing it just now, and my wife burst out laughing uncontrollably. Not a good sign in terms of the dorkiness factor.

ParticipantSome might say her reaction was a GREAT sign of dorkiness factor…

It’s obvious I gave up some time ago caring what I look like on my bike.
