Work should start on Bridge 23 soon. Construction was originally slated to begin in July. There was an issue with a migratory bird nesting underneath the bridge that contributed to a schedule impact.
African or European Sallow?

ParticipantBridge was open as of 1 PM today (when I walked across it)

Bottom line is newest estimate is “late fall 2023”
Preliminary work has begun on the replacement bridge for the Holmes Run Trail behind 4600 Duke Street in Alexandria. The area has been fenced off, temporary construction access paths have been laid (made of rocks), and, perhaps most important, a port-a-john has arrived on site.

The city issued a contract for the 4600 Duke St. bridge replacement and associated outfall stream bank stabilization in late December 2022. Following award of the contract, it was determined, due to current market conditions (supply chain issues & material availability), the lead time for the fabrication of the bridge is now 30 to 40 weeks as compared to the usual 16 weeks.
The construction for the associated outfall stream bank stabilization and infrastructure to receive the bridge will begin this month, February 2023, and weather permitting, will continue for up to five months (June/July).
Therefore, due to the delay in the fabrication of the bridge, we are anticipating a late fall 2023 completion. We will receive monthly updates on the status of the bridge fabrication timeline. We are hopeful the fabrication time may improve as the year progresses which could shorten the completion of the project.

ParticipantDon’t count on it. According to the flyer from the City, that zone was scheduled for pickup on 31 October, meaning it won’t get another pass until the other zones are done, which are scheduled through this coming week.

A few years ago I saw a bald eagle on the FMR trail near Arlandria. Maybe a bald eagle had the fish in its talons and dropped it.

The bridge repairs have been delayed by weather and challenges in tearing up the old concrete. The contractor said they expect to finish with the repaving early next week.
Carrying this over from the May R&TC thread (can I do that?)
Pretty embarrassing turn of events on the bridge project in west Alexandria. For the past week or so, no signs of any progress at all. Then today, on Alexandria’s project webpage, a brief note that the project is on hiatus due to “material shortage”.
Then, down at the bridge itself, the project poster has had the completion dates taped-over, an apparent white flag from the city.
This is very frustrating because the bridge was perfectly functional up until the moment the city closed it down for repairs, and now an important connector from the Duke Street corridor to Taney Avenue is closed off indefinitely.

Installation has started on the extension of the 15th NW PBL from Pennsylvania down to the mall (and eventually to the 14th Street bridge). Striping work is done between Pennsylvania and Constitution, but protection hasn’t yet been installed, so it’s not very usable yet. But soon!

Was in town a few weeks ago, and I noticed that the PBL goes all the way to Maine Avenue, very briefly on Maine, and then ends as the riders go to/from Ohio Dr SW.

ParticipantWell it’s now March 2021 – the presumed month in which the Lee Highway W&OD bridge, and nearby surface trail improvements, are due to open.
Has anyone been out that way recently, and can they report as to the status? I haven’t seen anything from VDOT about it.
Fairlington124
ParticipantThat was my thought as well. Until that point, if it ever happens, it will be “a nice scenic overlook for I-66”, according to my walking partner.
Fairlington124
ParticipantI also noticed a little stub of a trail leading back from the eastern side of the bridge. (You can see it on Google Earth…the right side of a “T” shape leading off from the mainline trail). Perhaps a future approach to a notional bridge over I-66 to the north side of the highway?

Also, the “double tracking” project in Falls Church is well underway, still mostly with earthmoving, excavation, and grading. Parts of the trail are closed, but fortunately there are plenty of detour options through the Falls Church neighborhoods, both on the north and south side of the trail.

Finally, and I realize this isn’t infrastructure, but some motorist apparently wanted to take a spin down the trail. This was at the intersection with West St. While it was mildly amusing watching the motorist get their car off the trail (after a nearby pedestrian let them know their problem), I’m mostly happy that their erroneous action’s didn’t put anyone on the trail at risk.

ParticipantWent for a walk today on the W&OD. Got some good footage of the Lee Highway bridge. It’s really close to being done – workers were putting in safety barriers along the side of it, and I would estimate that it’s probably going to be ready to open within a month or two, if not a few weeks.

ParticipantAny news on this front? I know fall and winter are slow times for infrastructure development.
