ParticipantThere will always be those who can’t let down their hair and have fun in life. There will always be those given to hyperbole and histrionics. With thirty years as a Wall Street Journal print subscriber, I think I can safely say that their editorial board is a hotbed of both categories of unhappy folk (or a combo thereof).
I’m tempted to trot out Dirt’s line, “We should all go for a bike ride!” Or failing that, wait an hour or two to see what BikeSnob NYC does with it.

ParticipantNice seeing so many people yesterday — I didn’t get too see all of you because I was manning the wristband booth the entire time I was there.
WABA and the other organizations made $27,000! Thanks, everyone, for coming out.
vvill, please tell me if there is any damage to your car upon further inspection and I will pay for any repairs — good thing I ride my bike to work and not drive.

Yesterday was all about snakes and their modeling debut? I was just about to stop for a cyclist squatting for a shot (nice SLR and lens!) on the Paint Branch when he sees me and waves me through …. towards the 3′ or 4′ black snake making his way across the trail (probably a racer – i noticed a lighter belly). I opted for a short cyclocross detour instead.
I saw one on the Cross County Trail on Saturday; not to scare all of you NoVa Epic-ers.

ParticipantBasic, sound advice, but on several occasions, legitimate, reputable bike shops have sold me or my loved one a bike that didn’t fit. By the time I figured it out, there was no going back to exchange it. These things can be tricky and while an LBS is the best place to go for most people, sometimes it’s not perfect.
Also, the type of advice I’ve seen doled out on this forum — ride as many bikes as possible, ask questions, figure out what you want to use the bike for (or the more specific advice about which models have disc brakes, etc.) — could be very useful and is not a “waste of time.”

ParticipantI really have nothing of substance to add, but now I understand why, when I used to play Congressional B League softball, the Australian Embassy team would bring a cooler of Fosters for the other team.

ParticipantCyndi, if you want to know the worst of what you’ll be facing, just take the bike out on the section of the CCT between Oakmarr and the W&OD. Any part of it would be representative, so just ride for as long as your schedule allows.
The rest of the trail: the Viaje would be fine if not preferable.
I’ll be interested to hear your feedback.
Would love to do this, but it is my husband’s birthday (and the day after Tour de Fat), and my husband can’t ride as much as he wants these days so I can’t very well go off on an adventure without him on his birthday . . .

ParticipantWell as long as we’re throwing around Terry Pratchett quotes, your blog post made me think of the following:
“Good. Now…if you trust in yourself…”
“Yes?”
“…and believe in your dreams…”
“Yes?”
“…and follow your star…” Miss Tick went on.
“Yes?”
“…you’ll still be beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy. Goodbye.”Good luck with the event, Pete. Are you going to post the link for donations again?

At Canal Park, my recently retired colleague (on the left in the red helmet) passes the baton as our agency’s bike commuter to me (on the right in the blue helmet).
There can be only one? Maybe you can find another before you retire so there can be at least two of you?
Congrats!

ParticipantWow, I don’t know what to say . . . I am awed by your excellence in ambition and overachievement!
My husband, kid and I will be the ones you see floating down the Yough, if you happen to look up, in our free time on our one or two week tour. 😎

You might try a slight variation, using University instead of Old Lee. Like this:

It is reasonably sane.

ParticipantNice to see JimK, skreamingquadz, dcv, RESTONTODC and culimerc at the Vienna Pit Stop this morning! Skreamingquadz was accompanied by a first time bike commuter, JimK by his wife and culimerc by his wife and several neighbors.
Also saw a bunch of my neighbors and FABB folks.
A great day! We had a tremendous turnout at our pit stop. Unfortunately, my camera battery died so no visual evidence.
