Scored the 14th St bridge for team 7 today (my wife helped).

I had never ridden into DC from VA before. It was great! There were cars everywhere, and planes going overhead, and monuments all over…I felt like a tourist! I also did a tour of Hains Point, but because I went in on one side and out the other, I didn’t score a full lap. Whatever, though! Thanks, BAFS for getting me out where I wouldn’t have gone otherwise!

My Novara rain pants worked really well yesterday and ok today.

My Novara rain pants have been great for four months, but I came home yesterday with a wet seat, because the waterproof lining has started to peel away, probably from friction around the saddle. I’m making a trip to REI Monday to ask them about it. If they replace them (which they probably will) I’ll still be very happy with them. Anyone know how to reduce friction on that lining?

I use the Shimano PD-M324 Dual Platform pedals. Great for clipping in on commutes and for hopping on in regular shoes for sleaze rides to the grocery store.

Ditto this, though I only got mine recently using Christmas money, with the expectation that sometime in the spring I’ll get the kind of shoes that real cyclists wear 😎 (thus I can’t say a thing about the clipless side, or durability). Till then, my waterproof Merrells go great on the grippy platform side, and have been fab all winter, come what may.

    N+1, my friend.

I did an extra-late commute from Falls Church to Vienna on the WOD at about 10:30, and by then it seemed like a normal, rainy commute. If temperatures go up as planned, things should be fine for the evening ride, or sleaze, or whatever. My only problem is that all this weather has caused my bike to be encrusted with grit everywhere, particularly where I notice it the most: drivetrain, rims…really frustrating, really time-consuming to clean up, really going to destroy the brakes in short order.

More accurately we took it back, but Congress was a little busy with Bleeding Kansas to notice. All over the right to own other people, not quite the moral high ground. :0

And most relevant, none of this helps with the bridge issue for Marylanders. (The OCD part of me does wish DC were a diamond, though.)

Tell me about it! I’ve ended up having to make a special trip from Bethesda to either the South Capitol Street Bridge or the Pennsylvania Avenue SE Bridge, while all those Virginians got their bridges by just going home from work.

Hey, man! We Virginians gave our share to the District; the District gave it back (in 1846, to be exact)!!

If your head isn’t warm before you go out, microwave that, too. But not if you have braces.

Those mustaches have to ride their own bikes. So do the sideburns.

Last night’s tailwind meant I was nice and toasty, and my speed was up; looking forward to the same tonight.

For some reason, I was colder tonight than last night, and the temp was higher than last night! I’m thoroughly confused. The only differences were that I had less of a tailwind tonight than last night (which may make a difference), and I was riding later last night than tonight (which shouldn’t make a difference, I think). Admittedly, the temp tonight was only up by a degree or two compared to last night, but still: same gear, same route. Whatever. The North Pole can have its stupid frigid air back, as far as I’m concerned. The cold hasn’t stopped me, but I can’t say I prefer it.

The headwind I fought all the way in (probably the only reason my feet got cold) will be a lovely tailwind all the way home. Last night’s tailwind meant I was nice and toasty, and my speed was up; looking forward to the same tonight.
