I just passed the 4000 mile mark on my ride to work this morning, the first time I’ve reached that milestone. A few years ago I was about 100 miles shy of 4000, but couldn’t get the extra miles in when we got hit by the big December snowstorm.

This line of reasoning always makes me roll my eyes. Why are you on a bike if you’re going to complain about the effort of pedaling? Would you accept this excuse from a driver who rolls through a stop sign or light to conserve gasoline?

Another thing to think about is how well the light puts the beam on the ground in front of you. A well designed light will have a more focused beam that doesn’t scatter light everywhere. Peter White Cycles has a good page that compares the output of many lights that they sell.

I’ve cycled to that store a few times as I went out to visit one of my friends in Lincolnia. I would take the W&OD trail to Columbia Pike, stop at the store, then continue on Columbia to Braddock Road. I was making my trek out there to refinish a set of chairs and a dining room table and he had a great garage space to work on the project. To get back to DC, I come back on Edsall Road, get on South Van Dorn to Eishenhower and making my way back to the Mt Vernon Trail.

There I was, stopped at the light for S Street, in the right lane but in the middle to give space to those who wanted to turn right at the light. A quick glance in my rear view mirror just showed a Toyota Rav4 behind me. Once the light turned green, I started moving to the right and climbing the hill, and you suddenly appeared in my life. You were close to being the last thing appearing in my life as you laid on your horn, passing me on the right. It’s not that you wanted to turn right on Florida Avenue…you just wanted to get by the long lines of traffic in the other lanes to flirt with me until you zoomed left across two lanes to continue northward on Connecticut.

It’s not just for DC groups. There are quite a few Virginia organizations at the festival.

I use a helmet mounted mirror, the Third Eye Pro. I find it more flexible than a handlebar mounted mirror as I switch back and forth from the handlebars to the aero bars. When my old mirror fell off (old adhesive lost grip in a heavy downpour), I felt more vulnerable without it as I cycled Beach Drive on my daily commute. I really like being aware of what’s coming up behind me.

I try to hit the CCT at least once a week when I head home from downtown Silver Spring to Dupont Circle. It’s a nice change of scenery and a little extra mileage on pleasant afternoons

I have a pair of Ortlieb Back Packers that I’ve been using for well over a decade. They’re sturdy!

I use the PitLocks skewers since I have a Schmidt generator in my front hub. The key has a hole in it, so it fits on my keychain. The nice thing about that is the key ring gives me enough leverage to tighten or loosen the Pitlock in most cases. It’s pretty rare that I have to take the key off the ring and use it with a wrench.
