Wait… did you just insult my bike?
I have even named it yet
Opps, I thought you were using a beater bike dug out of storage after many years of neglect. Sorry!!! :p

Mine shall be “Continental Drift”.

I wish they’d build the Purple Line already so we’d have a usable trail between SS and Bethesda.
I’m a little dismayed that the trail is being threatened, from not putting it in the Bethesda Tunnel to the Georgetown boathouse development, the trail is having issues on both ends

ParticipantI use the Capital Croissant as a springboard for rides out the north end of town sometimes. I try to avoid it when it is really nice weather out because it gets pretty crowded. I’d rather play with cars than add to the bike/ped/skate congestion on the CCT.

ParticipantI quite like the CCT as an option. You can almost forget you’re commuting or riding in a city. I just wish it linked to Chain Bridge better.

Those ones you had for breakfast looked pretty tasty! I’m still to try all the pastries at that place.

ParticipantCertifried – I’ve been a semi-regular on the CCT over the last 4 years- I commute from Chevy Chase MD to SE DC (about 17miles). I start at Oh-Dark-Thirty, and ride the CCT about 3 times a week, when I’m not recovering from broken bones or other life challenges (yes, I broke the wrists on the commute – watch out for those pedestrians!) The previous warning about deer is a good one – I ride with good lights (now a dynamo light set up) partly because I’ve had close encounters with deer, especially on the stretch of the CCT between Dalecarlia tunnel and Georgetown. You will see some wonderful things as you ride through the four seasons. Welcome to our gang.

ParticipantI’ve had close encounters of the furry kind in Rock Creek Park, but never on the CCT. But the deer are just as deadly. CCT’s more serious obstacle is cyclists using it as a race track. Oh, and angry turtles slowly moving between the canal and the river.

ParticipantI really appreciate all the warnings. I was only paying attention to other humanoid obstacles on the trail in the past, and never thought about the furry obstacles. After seeing quite a few deer out on my “pleasure” rides this weekend, I realize how dangerous the CCT could’ve been with me not even considering a collision with deer, etc. It will definitely be at the front of my mind now!

I think colliding with a deer is a very, very small risk. The biggest dangers are posed by the other humans by far. Fortunately, most people on the trails early morning M-F are commuters and know the drill and pose no problem. The afternoon commute during winter is the same thing – only the committed commuters are out in the dark. It’s the six months of nice weather in the afternoon that pose difficulties. If you aren’t in a hurry, you’ll be fine.

I came within a hair’s breadth of one of THESE incidents on the WO&D just past Hunter Mill late in fall, spooked a deer who cleared the trail but there was a second one in the bushes that nearly got me.

You are correct sir, I’ve found through extensive research that I am the only one leaving from my house that arrives at my office and therefore of all the people bike commuting each day, I am the only one doing my commute. I try not to worry about how fast I am going or how long it takes. It’s nice to see that I’ve been steadily improving, but I don’t even use a bike computer anymore because I would be too worried about the speed it said I was going, or not going. Bike your own commute!

ParticipantI’ve been commuting on the CCT once or twice a week for the past two years. It is a great trail. Why did I Metro->CaBi this morning instead of just riding in?
June 8, 2012 at 12:47 am #942419Certifried
ParticipantUgh, I ’bout died today (metaphorically speaking). I should’ve bailed out and snagged the metro home once it hit 7, but I pushed through. Now I’m going to be paying for it! I’m definitely not quite in shape enough to ride both ways every day yet (especially 2 days after a spinal procedure).

ParticipantOuch! Take it easy there, scary clown face! (Feel better!)

ParticipantThanks! I plan on it. The “procedure” was an RFA (I’ve mentioned elsewhere). Big needle, raw nerves, lots of heat, destroyed nerves, then after a few weeks no more pain (until they grow back, they’re peripheral sensory nerves, which regenerate after, for me, about 9 months). Not really invasive or something that keeps me more than just sore for a few days. I just bit off too much with the whole carrying my desk on my back thing LOL. I have this crazy idea that I can do a triathlon now, so considering training for the Nation’s Tri in September. Probably something an old arthritic body shouldn’t be doing… (please talk me out of it haha)
