ParticipantTo be clear, the Babylon Bee is a conservative version of The Onion.

I was particularly impressed that the Post used snot rocket correctly in the sentence “There’s such a thing as a “snot rocket,” which — well, look it up.” Kudos to Angela Haupt, the journalist, who probably consulted the AP (About Phlegm) style guide.
Likely the first use of the term in the Post in, well, all time.

ParticipantMe: Enjoying the closed sections of Beach Drive
You: Enjoying the closed sections of Beach Drive, wondering why all these bike and pedestrians are in the way of your car.Cycling south on Beach Drive, just past the Wise Road gate, I encountered you driving north. Wondering how you would get past the gates at Wise, I turned around and followed you up the road. I enjoyed watching you try to nose the gates open. But what was even more satisfying was the screech of metal as the unyielding gates crumpled the sides of your car. Was the shortcut worth all that body damage to your car?
When I continued on my ride, I noticed that gates near Picnic Area 10 were now opened wide enough for a car to go through. Was that your work also?
Regardless (and not irregardless, Merriam-Webster), when I got home, I shot off an email to the park superintendent with these pictures in case they want to bill you for damage to the gates…just to add insult to injury.

ParticipantYes you can. Pry off the black cover and you’ll see the CR2032 battery.

ParticipantWhich is a real pity, seeing how both the 14th Street Bridge and the TR Bridge have much narrower paths

ParticipantFinally! I’ve written to the superintendent a few times about this.
I don’t know of any plans to widen this section of the trail, unfortunately. The only current improvement project on the books is for the Rose Park trail and the trail north of P Street. And that has been stalled for over a year now.

ParticipantI’m looking forward to the closing celebration!

Do all 8 segments show up in your segment list for the ride?
Yes. I’ve checked the FS Loopy page and my Least-Ridden Segment has shown different segments on the various times I’ve visited the page. Sometimes CW8, others CW2, but when I click on that segment, it shows my results from the day I did the loop.

This ride wasn’t counted for my only loop around Arlington so far during the contest.

A cyclist was being loaded by stretcher into a fire truck around 8:30 this morning. It was on the segment of Rock Creek Trail between Pennsylvania Ave and P Street. This is a narrow part of the trail that has been further narrowed by brush dumped on the edge of the path. This brush was cut some weeks (months?) ago from the slope above the trail and dumped below but not yet removed.
I don’t know what happened and I didn’t stick around.
I’ve been sending emails to the Rock Creek Superintendent to request they clear the trail in various spots. Unfortunately, little is ever done. Please add your voice!

Hey, I’m new here and I thought it was fascinating that I happened across your post, because I was just there the other day thinking the same thing when Google directed me down that same ramp; and this was before I was even aware of this forum lol!
I’m sure by this time you’ve already met with your friend, but I wanted to mention for future reference that there’s a small trail just behind the wooden guard rail of the on ramp leading down the hill onto RC Trail. It seems to have been carved by cyclists who were in our same predicament lol (bless em.) Honestly, it may be a bit sketchy depending on what kinda bike you’re on, but for me, it definitely beat riding directly down the ramp lol.
I hope this is beneficial to you, or possibly someone else in the future.

One bad side effect from this desire trail is that the runoff after a rain storm leaves a layer of mud, gravel, and sand on the paved trail. USPS is very lax at cleaning the trail, so that debris stay there for far too long.

ParticipantIt’s an extremely wide road at the ramp, with each lane over 15′ wide. A few years ago, the city painted some preliminary lines delineating separate pedestrian/bike lanes, but the Park Service put a stop to that. Eventually, when the project to rebuild the trail north of P Street, separated paths will be added on each side of the road. See this page for more detailed plans.
