Greetings! I’m sponsoring a Pointless Prize for the rider who does the most laps of the Ross Hill Loop segment in Rock Creek Park.

This is a 3.6 mile loop that starts and ends at the intersection of Beach Drive and Joyce Road NW. It runs clockwise, so it does the climb up the Ridge Road lacets. Each lap has 264 feet of climbing.

Simply tag your rides with the #rosshillloop hashtag to put the ride in consideration. The prize will be worth the climbing. Photos not necessary but not discouraged, either.

Is there a reason you’re recording this prize by using hashtags instead of using the Strava segments? For example, the Hains Point prize does by segment, as does the Arlington Loop prizes. A few years ago, there was the POGGIO competition, riding up Ross Drive, that didn’t require a hashtag.

The big drawback of using a hashtag is that multiple loops in a single ride would only count once. There were a few of using doing the POGGIO many times in a single ride for a spirited competition. The IT geniuses behind the FS back-end should be able to help set this up using the segment.

    1/1/2023 Fire

Built in 1894, the Cairo was Washington DC’s highest building at 164 feet. At the time, none of the fire-fighting equipment in DC could not reach to the upper floors of the building. The concern about a fire in the skyscraper lead to Congress passing the Height of Buildings Act of 1899, limiting the maximum height of buildings in DC to 130 ft.

The gates on Ross Drive were open yesterday. Since the leaves and debris were swept up, this must mean it’s open to car traffic again.

The Rock Creek trail will be closed between Virginia Avenue and Monument Circle (Lincoln Memorial) from June 1 to 15 as they open the tunnel under the Roosevelt Bridge and reconfigure the “Belvedere”.

“UPDATE: From June 1-15, construction on upgrades to the bike & pedestrian path between the Kennedy Center & the National Mall will force a closure of the trail along the Potomac. Detours will be clearly marked at Virginia Avenue & Parkway Drive.”

What’s the difference between a major and minor bike trail? For example, the Anacostia Trail north of East Capitol Street is designated a major trail, but is minor south of there. Why is the towpath in Georgetown east of 31st Street included as a minor trail, but west of 31st to Fletcher’s Boathouse isn’t? West of Fletcher’s it’s a major trail.

I sent an email to the Rock Creek Superintendent about the reopening date. I received this reply today:

This is in response to your inquiry on the status of the Multi-Use Trail between P Street and Shoreham Drive.

The park is awaiting the report from the geophysical investigations near the Mt. Zion/ FUBS location. We anticipate getting the report back within 2 weeks and briefing the stakeholders thereafter. Upon briefing the stakeholders, DDOT will be notified to continue the work on the trail. At this point we are not sure how long it will take for DDOT to mobilize and complete the work in that area (digging up and replacing the old trail, mill and overlay, and installing the fencing). As we receive more clarity, we will share information with the public.

    1. You could follow Custis (not Curtis, by the way) to the connection with the Mt Vernon trail (easy enough just by following the trail down the hill after crossing Lynn Street), cross by the Jefferson Memorial following the path to 15th Street, up 15th Street and then following Jefferson Drive the length of the Mall. It has issues (the “Intersection of Doom” at Lynn street; the long boardwalk (slippery when wet; thus the nickname “Trollheim”–where the trail divides going south with the right hand going west over the TR bridge and the left proceeding south); 15th Street (no bike lane); and Jefferson (no high speed traffic but no bike lane).

One small correction to this. There is now a protected bike lane on 15th Street starting at the Tidal Basin.

I still catch myself slowing down to check out the license plates on cars parked next to the bike lanes
