ParticipantPrizes will be awarded each month. Miles must be either uploaded or manually entered by 11:59 PM on the last day of the month to be counted.

ParticipantI got mine (which actually fits onto my shoelaces) from GoSportID. And I got a $10 discount on it via Earndit, which gives you discounts and/or makes charitable contributions on your behalf based on points earned bicycling (among other activities).
I’ve probably had mine a couple of years, and it has shown no signs of wearing out. It’s not as though it gets a lot of stress, since the top side doesn’t rub up against anything, and my shoelaces are just threaded through the rubber band it’s attached to (so the band itself is not stretched).

ParticipantThanks! I never lived in Worcester (or anywhere in Massachusetts), but was most grateful to it for allowing us to get married at a time when other jurisdictions wouldn’t. We had only a day in Massachusetts before our wedding, so we raced back and forth between the marriage license office and the courthouse (to get a court waiver of the usual three-day waiting period). Fortunately, the judge didn’t give us a lot of grief after we explained that we hadn’t been able to get the marriage license earlier because we lived in Maryland. And the spectators who had been watching one sordid family law matter after another before we arrived actually cheered us when we got the waiver. We then drove the rest of the way up to Winchester, and got married in a lovely little synagogue there.

ParticipantAs someone in possession of Maryland plates, it is my considered opinion that Virginia does its best to make sure Maryland drivers will be driving dangerously when in Virginia, by setting up road signage (or lack thereof) designed to ensure that anyone not born in Virginia will be continuously lost while trying to drive there. Favorites are:
- Major roads with no signs.
- Roads that change names every few blocks.
- Multiple roads in different locations with essentially the same name. (How many Glebe Roads are there?)
And let’s not even mention the aberrations like Temporary Road (with a far from temporary sign). :rolleyes:

ParticipantWell, if it ever doubles up on miles, you should be able to delete the extra ones. If deleting them in Endomondo doesn’t work, there should be a “clear miles” option if you click on the relevant day. Or you can enter a ride with a negative number of miles to balance out the extra ride.

I tried syncing from Endomondo but nothing showed up so I entered miles manually – now to see if it doubles up on the rides or not

ParticipantThank you! I suspect that the inner tube wasn’t so much punctured as rotting due to age. But I ordered a new one from the site you linked.

ParticipantYeah, I’m aware of this one. However, last time I actually was in an accident, I realized that my documentation was several years old, and that the likelihood of my wife remembering where to find it in my files during the stress of an emergency was low. It’s a whole lot easier to get proof of marriage, which can actually be found on the Worcester City (Massachusetts) website.
However, things are at least much better for us than they used to be. We have been together since 2001, but couldn’t get married at all before 2008. (Massachusetts had same-sex marriage before then, but only for Massachusetts residents.) And it was 2010 before my home state of Maryland recognized our marriage, and 2013 before the federal government did.
@Emm 84472 wrote:
Although not a perfect fix for this, the federal govt does require all hospitals that accept medicare and medicaid funding (which is virtually all hospitals) to extend visitation rights to same-sex partners and respect people’s choices about who makes decisions about their care (i.e. as long as you have documentation, your wife can make medical decisions on your behalf). At least in northern VA, hospitals should be good about this, and most have written policies in place that reflect this. Just make sure you have the proper documentation ready in case it ever comes up.
If you ever travel out of state to anywhere that doesn’t recognize your marriage, you should have the documentation handy. It’s a pain, but worthwhile if you haven’t done it already.

ParticipantIt’s between Potomac Street and Blues Alley on Wisconsin. If you just start up Wisconsin from K Street, you will see it. Just look for the canal, and then take the path that runs beside it. If you get as far as M Street, you’ve gone too far.

Great!
Where exactly is the entrance on Wisconsin Avenue to the towpath?
Many thanks.

ParticipantIn this one, the stroller tire is an inflatable one. I always carry a pump. But I’m just not sure how easy it is to find the tubes for this tiny tire.
@hozn 84453 wrote:
If it’s like the Burley the tiny front stroller tire is solid rubber (tubeless!).
I would definitely keep a spare tube in the trailer (and assuming you are carrying tire lever + a pump that accommodates the valve type of your 20″ spare). I’ve had 3 flats in as many months with my Burley trailer. It’s a 2004 model that I bought used and probably this is the first time things are going flat on it. One of those flats was, I’m contending, a contributing factor in rolling the trailer around a corner, so definitely I recommend having whatever you need to fix flats in the trailer tires.

ParticipantYou can take the Canal Towpath from Georgetown to Fletcher’s Cove, then get onto the Capital Crescent Trail from there. Several people have reported that conditions on the Canal Towpath are good enough for road bikes. Getting up to the Canal Towpath just involves a short but steep climb up Wisconsin Avenue from K Street.

Hello All,
Each day, I ride my road bike down the Capital Crescent Trail from my home at 30th and K NW in Georgetown to the Bethesda Ave. terminus, and back for exercise. Love it.
As you likely know, the CCT is currently closed due to a broken sewage pipe and overflow.
Can anyone suggest some (hopefully paved) alternatives that are close to Georgetown? The closer the better, as I usually do this right before work.
Alternatively, is there a path to enter the CCT from Georgetown past the point of the sewage overflow?
I haven’t inspected the conditions, so it is unclear as to how much of the paved section of the CCT running from Water St. in Georgetown to Bethesda Ave. is affected.
Many thanks for your ideas and suggestions.

ParticipantI think the two side wheels are 20″. However, there is a third wheel that is used in front when the trailer is used as a stroller, which is much smaller. And I want to be able to use the trailer as a stroller, because I really don’t want to have to be carrying a stroller in addition to the trailer if we’re going somewhere that will require a stroller once we get there.
@DismalScientist 84447 wrote:
It says it has 20″ wheels. That’s a standard smaller (but not ridiculously small) kid’s bike tire size. Tubes and tires should be easily available. I would avoid getting knobbies though.:rolleyes:

ParticipantAlas, even if I could manage to steal her from her parents (who tend to be picky about that sort of thing!), it is 10 miles just to get to Arlington for me. And bicycling in Virginia is always a bit scary. One of my nightmares is having any kind of accident and ending up in a hospital in a state that would not recognize my wife as my next of kin.
@dasgeh 84438 wrote:

Of course, all are welcome on the ride, kid or no

ParticipantI’ve tried carrying my (64 lb. with an average load) bike up those steps. After one episode, I decided that it was easier just to bike back to Wisconsin Avenue and bike up that to M Street, even though it’s longer.

Lesson learned from last night’s commute home:
When you see some reference to a trail problem that impacts your intended route, it behooves you to check into it and not just brush it off. I refer, of course, to the sewage spill on the CCT. I did get to show off my shouldering skills as I carried my (fully loaded, 40 plus pounds) commuter up the stairs to the tow path. I don’t think I’m ready to do that every day, but it could have been worse. At least I stayed dry!

ParticipantThanks for the warnings! I got mine from Craigslist, and it is already about 10 years old. But I have my granddaughter only rarely (generally on minor Jewish holidays when her daycare is closed, but her parents are still going to work). And she’s never been in a bike trailer before, so I have no idea whether she’ll love it or be terrified by it. So I figured I’d get something very inexpensive to try out, and not worry too much about long-term durability. If I find she likes it and I have her (and/or any future siblings) more often than anticipated, I can always upgrade then.
One question about the pneumatic tires–have you ever had a flat? And how easy is it to get new tubes/tires if that happens? They don’t exactly seem to be a standard size.
@americancyclo 84430 wrote:
We have one of those. Watch out when folding it up for storage (if you do that) the window plastic on mine has torn where it connects to the fabric and now my daughter likes to stick her hand out of it like an open window.
The rear nylon support in the back also rends to poke through when folded, ripping a small hole in the sleeve.
other than those two complaints (and the weight) it’s done a great job for the past two years!

ParticipantNo recent purchases of a bike as such. But I just got a new InSTEP Ride N Stride Bike Trailer and Stroller, so I can haul my granddaughter around when she’s here.
