So, exactly how FUBARed is tomorrow afternoon’s commute looking?
There’s a fine line between adventure lovin’ and insanely reckless. Ride tomorrow and find out which it is.

ParticipantWill be a wet one. Per the Capitol Weather Gang, “The onset of rain in the immediate metro region is likely to between around 2 and 5 p.m. Wednesday’s rush hour could be a mess, with downpours, reduced visibility, and ponding of water on roadways.”
As long as temps are 55 or above, I’m still thinking the rain bike with neoprene socks and a not-very-water-resistant jacket.

ParticipantWell, I was in front of him, so he moved to within an inch of me after the light turned but before the line moved, and then when I moved back in front–there was not enough room in the lane for both of us–he also moved forward, bumping me. Kind of jerkish, though I don’t think he meant to hit me. He clearly meant to squeeze me out of his way.
We had a chat at my insistence, though, as I said, using only civil language.

And…don’t know about you, but I beat the rain. It looks like it may pass by my evening commute time. Lots of win today.
It did indeed work out great. Except for the part where the usual 4 lanes of Southbound traffic on Connecticut Avenue were cut to 2 because of the holiday, causing some stress. Enough for one driver to tap me after I filtered past him in his stopped car. I told him reasonably calmly that he couldn’t do that. He told me that I couldn’t pass him on the right, and seemd genuinely surprised when I told him that, in fact, I could perfectly legally do just that. We exchanged a few more words, all without name-calling or cursing, he apologized and we all went on our way.
Score one for zen.

ParticipantI’d vote for tossing the first hub. If the bearings are corroded, chipped or broken, they’ve probably already scored the cup walls, and in short order these will destroy the new bearings. I concur with the others that 7k is a pretty short lifespan. My hubs typically last twice that, even not very good ones. And I’m hard on my equipment. Did you do a lot of riding in the rain? It’s possible that a cheap hub might let more water in, which washed out the original grease.

Has anyone seen one in the wild in this area?
I saw one last week on the Capitol Crescent. It looked fairly dorky, but then, all helmets do to some extent.

From the dates on the sign in the photo, it appears this photo was actually taken next summer and sent back in time.

ParticipantI’m starting to hate all picture taking devices in general. Although the “Boy on Fire” photos in the Cyclocross 2014 thread are remarkable in their own way.

October 9, 2014 at 1:11 pm in reply to: Which bike should I buy for winter commuting, weekend rides, and Freezing Saddles? #1011823Crickey7
ParticipantAgreed, the second bike seems steeply discounted, the first seems cheap.

Golf can be done cheaply or expensively, just like bike riding.
9 holes at RCP for $15. That’s less than one jar of embrocation.http://www.niagaracycle.com/categories/paceline-eurostyle-warm-embrocation-8oz-jar?gclid=CJDe6YHuncECFStgMgodETYAEA Although I just slap some Sriracha sauce on.

But more people cycling has benefits for everyone, even those who don’t cycle. What benefit to society in general would we get from having more people golf?
That could be asked of a great many leisure activities, including, I’d argue, masses of people packing hiking trails they drove to reach.

ParticipantPlaying rain roulette this evening. But it looks now like as long I leave after 6:30 and get home before 7:30, I should be both dry AND have a tailwind.
