Capitol Crescent is now clear, still some trees blocking the Towpath.

The whole misbegotten rerouting violates basic design principles; if you have to rely on a sign to overcome people’s natural preferences, the design will probably fail. Pedestrians in particular are going to choose the passage that’s closest to them, and most of the time that will be the one on the South side of the entrance that’s designated for cyclists. It seems to me that what they should do is shift the drive portion and gate more to the North, and make a larger (and better paved) pedestrian and cyclist passage on the South side.

Due to utility work, southbound Jones Mill Rd. is closed just before East-West Hwy. The “official” detour is Twin Forks Lane, and then a left across four lanes of East-West Hwy. A lot of fun–not. I’m tempted to salmon on the shoulder instead.

Why wouldn’t you hop on the trail and cross at Meadowbrook?

If you can buy a used Burley-type trailer, in my experience you can sell it for what you paid for it with little difficulty.

That’s smart if you have any desire to go through there quickly. That whole stretch of road is chaos whether on a bike or in a car and the two-way PBL has significantly increased the complexity of the traffic pattern. I mostly use the PBL but take it slowly, and skip it altogether and use the boardwalk on “bad” weather days when there aren’t many pedestrians about.

Now that they’ve finished the road work, it’s a lot better. Before, I once had a driver go an entire block in the PBL and then hit me. I’ve had a lot of interactions with drivers in the PBL there over the years, and while the police were quite responsive in the one instance where I was struck, in general they do squat. If I see a driver in the lane, I do ask them to move. FYI, for discussion purposes with drivers, the fine for being in the bike lane is $500.

Looks like it’s time to break out the Go Pro, after 2.5 years of not needing it. Last night, I dismounted to cross in a marked, signed crosswalk on River Road, pointed my very bright flashers at oncoming traffic, and still had to jump out of the way at the last second because a car that started over a block away literally would not stop.

I’d just get a nose ring, but that’s me.

I used to ride a parallel route all the way into Tacoma Park, and the Rhode Island Ave portion was always the worst.

I ride MacArthur all the time, even at rush hour. Drivers are used to lots of cyclists and accordingly that’s really one of the lowest stress roads you could choose, though they can get a little bad on the stretch south of Glen Echo at rush hour.

I had this problem with that brand of lock–it was like the tumblers themselves got out of alignment. A couple of times, it took upwards of 20 minutes to coax them back into alignment. What worked was keeping the key in and jostling the cylinder, even some tapping against a hard floor.

Yep. If you can put on both parties, there are two deductibles instead of one.
