ParticipantA lot of it’s like this – it COULD be done on skinny tires, but my co-worker (in the photos) and I definitely appreciated the extra cushioning.

I didn’t get any pics of the really nasty spots, at least none that I can find.
The scenery is just incredible.

There, ridewithgps and other websites which generated questions someone with first hand experience may be able to answer such as how truely rideable is the dirt road/trail around Kaena Point on a roadbike?
I wouldn’t do it. I did it two years ago on a rented fatbike and there were a few challenging spots even on 4″ tires. Would MAYBE consider a crossbike, knowing I’d have to walk in quite a few spots. It’s an amazing ride.

I rode the 54 Straggler almost 6000 miles without any problem, and ordered the Wolverine in the same size because it has almost identical geometry. Soon thereafter I started having knee problems…..
Might it have anything to do with that huge chainring? What is that, a 52? My knees hurt just looking at that!

Maybe a Fatbike running 7psi?
I’ve ridden a fattie a few times – would definitely do the job for Canton Ave.

ParticipantCanton Avenue:
It’s a brutal grade, but the cobbles/grass are what pushes it over the top. I found once I got my balance right, the grade itself was doable. But the back tire skidding out on the grass made me unable to complete it (I made it ~2/3 of the way on my best attempt).
I do want to go back. It’s an awesome challenge. And there are plenty of other great hills nearby to hit as well. I might try it in the late fall, though, when the grass won’t be as much of an issue.

ParticipantI reported it to Vienna PD last night – asking that they just talk to the property owner about the safety issue, rather than citing her/him for anything.
Haven’t gotten a response yet.

It really is like learning to ride all over again. And if you forget you’re on a fixed and stop pedaling, the bike reminds you!
That’s for sure! I’ve only forgotten once so far, thankfully right when I crested a hill and wasn’t going particularly fast. But it was sure jolting!

ParticipantFirst fixed gear commute this morning. I feel like I’ve learned to ride all over again. Super fun.
