    Hi,

I’m looking for a hill(s) that is at least ½ mile or greater long with a gradient of 30% or more climb. Are there places within a 25 mile radius of Fairfax?

No, I’m not riding the TDF, but want to find out from veterans from this group if such places or hills exist.

    Thank you.

I wonder if a studded rear tire would help?

based on how studs reduce traction on stone and pavement, I assume it would make it worse

I don’t know the actual grade, but the stretch of South Kings Highway between Telegraph and Route 1 has some pretty serious and lengthy slopes to it. The first hill is like 100′ over maybe 1/4 or 1/2 mile, if I remember my Cub Scout orienteering correctly.

You will cross a peak heading south, drop back down into another valley, and climb another 150′ over 3/4 of a mile.

Further north, you could turn right on to Franklin Street. It climbs 40′ or so in just 300′ or so. That section of Franklin has warning signs and prohibitions for truck traffic.
