ParticipantMonster cross adventure bike anyone? Soma Wolverine frameset for sale, 54cm. Ridden less than 50 miles, all in fair weather and on roads. Built up, but had the wrong size and need to buy another frame.

ParticipantDon’t worry, a 56 frame will be swapped in and the belt drive fixie will live on!! I may try an internal gear hub on there as well (have belt drive, will experiment!).

ParticipantIsn’t that your second too small frame? Who’s been fitting you for these things?

I rode the 54 Straggler almost 6000 miles without any problem, and ordered the Wolverine in the same size because it has almost identical geometry. Soon thereafter I started having knee problems, and decided the fit would be better on a 56. I can’t explain it: one would think I wouldn’t have lasted 6000 miles on a too-small bike, so ultimately I don’t think the fit was that far off. Also, my knee problems aren’t necessarily a result of cycling, since it doesn’t seem to matter to my knees whether I ride or not, they hurt either way. Anyhoo…in general, I am a bit more comfortable on a 56, so that’s what I’m doing. I haven’t owned many bikes anyway, so I feel like I’m still figuring this stuff out.

ParticipantIt always amazed me you were riding such a small frame (the Straggler). Aren’t you around 6ft tall? Of course the pros tend to ride small frames!

Almost six feet, but I must have short legs or something, because I struggle to get close enough over the pedals for proper KOPS.

What is your seattube angle? (Or your optimal STA?). I have the same problem re KOPS — short femurs. I need a 73.5° STA.
(And zero setback post of course.)
But changing frame size won’t help with KOPS, unless the STA angle of the larger/smaller frame is steeper (usually STA only goes down on larger frames); the hypotenuse of the triangle will always be the same length regardless of frame size since your legs are the same length. (You will just have less/more seatpost exposed.)
To quantify affect of STA on KOPS, for an example 80cm center-of-BB to top of saddle, every 0.5° steeper moves you 0.7cm further forward.

ParticipantYou couldn’t sell that Soma in a 58 could you? :>) Really nice looking bike; someone is going to be very happy with it.

When I got the 54 Straggler I was more concerned with top tube length, which on the 54 reads more like a 56 frame. It wasn’t until I started having knee pain (which may or may not be related to bike fit—seems like nothing I’ve tried has helped the knees much, including not riding) that I started thinking about KOPS. I found I needed a zero setback post to get to where I wanted to be without cranking the saddle past its limit, and at that point the reach on the 54 became awkward. So sizing up the frame didn’t help the fore/aft position, but it did make the reach much better. I don’t think I need an unusual or specific STA, but the zero setback gives me a better position on an average STA. The current frame STA is 72.5, which is less than the 54 frame, which had 73.
Bike fit is so hard to understand.

It’s only the frame that’s going, so the next owner will have to make it look nice, too! The frame is easy to work with, though, in that regard (as long as you like orange!).

Um, if anyone wanted the full bike, let’s talk.

Bike sizes are an interesting thing. I’m 6’3 but feel like my 58cm frames are pushing it on being too big. The arms and the fingers aren’t proportionate with the rest of my body.

I have an orange Soma MTB, and an orange Masi CX, and an old, orange Falcon Merckx frame from when I was a kid that I won’t get rid of even though it’s of no use. (The frame is bent and my brother cut the fork off with a hacksaw for parts when I went to college.) So yeah, I like orange.
