The documents likely won’t be posted until the meeting occurs. I saw a post on Twitter advertising the meeting which showed one of the lanes on the one way section becoming a bike/ped only lane and the other lane remains by a car lane with sparrows. The loop would also be closed to tour busses (which have been the cause of my worst experiences at HP)
My understanding is that this project is in response to two pedestrians being killed at HP.

Thanks. I would hope they would at least post the presentation slide deck a few days prior to the public meeting. I’ll try to tune in.

ParticipantThe project web site is a little light on specifics. There’s nothing in the “document library.” My concern is they’ll violate the “first, do no harm” principle. What problem are they trying to solve? Ohio Drive (the one-way section) seems to work pretty well as is, and the conflicts are mostly from inattentive drivers backing out of angled parking spaces without looking, speeding cars and motorcycles, and other shenanigans. Most people seem to have figured out “slower traffic keep right,” and it works well for the most part. I hope it doesn’t become a lane separation scheme with flexi-bollards and less room for maneuver.

ParticipantThat’s partially my commute route. You might try continuing south on the Mount Vernon Trail, instead of crossing the river on the TR. Then cross Memorial Bridge on the south side, and follow the wide sidewalks along the Reflecting Pool, and around the Washington Monument. Then you’re on Jefferson Drive down the Mall. One-way, very little traffic in the mornings. That takes you to 3rd St.
To reverse the process to go westbound in the pm, take Madison Dr. along the Mall. Madison gets a little more crowded in the afternoon, but it’s all low speed auto traffic. Filter through that mess. Just watch out for runners and pedestrians who will dart out between the stopped cars.
Good luck!

ParticipantApril 11-15, and possibly also 18-22 (Monday-Friday). Upgrade of a 230 kV transmission line. The closed section is between approximately Claibourne Pkwy. and Cochran Mill.
The detour is formidable (shades of the Reston Century route)

ParticipantWe’re still waiting for a replacement footbridge in Lubber Run Park to replace two bridges destroyed by the flash flood on July 8, 2019. Construction is supposed to start “soon” on one bridge. The other will not be replaced. We had to wait through a Capital Improvement cycle and then a lengthy public engagement process. All this to put a footbridge back in exactly the same place. If it were a road bridge, would it take 3 years? That’s a rhetorical question.

The only time I saw that (PBL closed) was when the POTUS motorcade came through. (the other areas were weird, but intrepid riders were finding their way to impromptu useable pavement)
Thanks. I didn’t see a motorcade. Maybe I was just there at a bad time. That transition south across Maine Ave. is more than a little awkward, even under normal bike traffic levels. I think I will find a different way home other than 14th St Bridge until the blossom hysteria abates.

ParticipantIf NPS wants to pedestrianize the whole experience, they should just do that. And maybe run shuttle van services for people with mobility problems.
But this farrago of weird half-measures and seemingly arbitrary closures?? Like three lanes northbound only on Ohio Drive beyond the Tidal Basin inlet. Or the cop who barked at me to get on the sidewalk that was absolutely rammed with people instead of simply riding on the wide-open street. The 15th St PBL was similarly impaired yesterday down near Maine Ave. Cyclists were ordered to get on the packed sidewalk. They should be encouraging people to cycle there, and not be throwing up literal roadblocks.

ParticipantYeah, not a big fan of amplified music, food trucks, etc., in a park setting. Plus it’s expressly prohibited by NPS regulations. Keeping a lower profile might be a good idea. There is enough obnoxious behavior at HP/Ohio Drive as it is.

Participant“Citizens” paid for the whole thing…one way or another.

ParticipantIf only Arlington spent as much time actually being “bike-friendly” as it did collecting awards and patting itself on the back. The pedestrian/bike accommodations on the decaying West Glebe Rd. bridge are equally abysmal.

News for people who ride through Foggy Bottom, the roadworks fencing blocking half of 21st St NW on the East side of the State Dept between Virginia Ave and C St NW has been removed, while that block remains a one-way street heading South the East sidewalk has been opened up so you no longer need to cross 21st St twice to avoid the obstruction when travelling Northbound from the Mall towards the 21st St & Virginia Ave PBL’s.
That’s on my normal route home, and that right lane has been closed for what seems like years. Here’s hoping for improved access to the Memorial Bridge from the 21st/20th Streets PBLs. Going south, I usually do a “Crazy Ivan” west on Constitution and a “green arrow” onto Henry Bacon.

Riding two-abreast is in danger of becoming illegal if Senate Bill SB362 passes the Virginia Senate tomorrow (Thursday).

That’s not what the bill says. It would not “outlaw” riding two abreast. But, they did add language saying, “[P]ersons riding two abreast shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic” and “shall move into a single-file formation as quickly as is practicable when being overtaken from the rear by a faster-moving vehicle.” These amendments seem like vague and largely unenforceable provisions. Who defines “impede”? Or “practicable”? Or that bugaboo in the law, “reasonable?”
Anyway, as amended, passed the Senate this morning 35 Y 4 N.

Can you believe this legislation was introduced in the Virginia legislature in 2022?!?

Currently in Virginia, the driver of a car faces a maximum fine for a stop sign citation of $250. However, convicted motorists are typically fined $101 for a red light citation and $88 for a stop sign ticket. This bill would impose a $500 fine and impound your bike for 6 months!
Plus court costs and a 4-point “demerit” on your license.
Still, I agree this bill is ridiculous “boob bait” and appears to be motivated by personal animus. Predict it will die in committee.
