That bike and bag plus those fenders look very yummy … I might have to take up randonneuring just for the excuse to own something like that!

Guess I did see Rando Guy today, made a nice fenders comment as covet mode went into overdrive.

I was waiting for a friend to show up in Vienna along the W&OD. I kicked back and just leaned against my bike for about 30 minutes. I had 4 people roll by and say some variation on, “Hey Dirt!”. None were people that I really knew. The tone of voice was such that it was positive feedback.

The best is if I’m standing talking to someone who doesn’t know me from the forum when someone comes up and asks me if I’m Dirt and then introduces themselves. The look on the face of the person is quite priceless when they figure out that I’m not at all offended by being asked if I’m Dirt. :D

Introduce yourselves when we met, if you’ve got time. People were rolling by pretty fast, so I understand not stopping. It is cool to put names with faces. I don’t always remember them the first time or two, but everything eventually sinks in. :D

I haven’t told you lately, but y’all make me happy. This community… both on the Interwebs and when we bump into each other while turning a pedal… is truly remarkable.

    Rock on!

There was a fine assortment of VO fenders being rocked today at Friday Coffee Club The First – dang we’re a classy bunch :D

@kayak, to be fair I use this bike as a townie and touring bike. back when i made this user name I was going to take up Randonneuring full on….Perhaps early next year with 100 or 200km’s but nothing like they are doing right now – 600km’s. Crazy miles for me, at least right now anyway.

Nice to finally meet you out and about! Thanks for snapping the pic. Behind me is my buddy Matt. He started bike commuting two months ago, trying to do one day a week. Now he’s just about an every day commuter. Today we left work on the early side to ride down to Port City. After we saw DCV, we didn’t see any more forum members, but on the Holmes Run Trail, we did see a lot of downed trees:

Some crazy driver with a mustache and a fractional name tried to run me, my wife, and the dog off the road :D Is the car a fixie too?

    It’s the automotive equivalent—it’s a manual.
Now, for goodness sake, let the pooch do the steering.

I’ve heard that is almost a Zen way of driving a car, like you are one with the vehicle. It’s totally different and amazing.

Surely the fixed equivalent has to actually be a car where you don’t have any concept of gears. Maybe a CVT automatic?

A geared bike is like a car with a manual transmission with an inoperable clutch that one can “jam” into what ever gear you want. A fixie is like a manual transmission car without a clutch and whose gear box is sufficiently screwed up that you can’t move the shift lever.

I say this affectionately, of course…

You are right; that is the correct analogy. :) I had a Saab like that for a little while :)

Putting a CVT in a car is like ripping out its soul. The first car I own without a clutch had better be self-driving.
