Participant… was fine until 14th St where I ended up shouting “Hey!” most of the way down. Guess I should go post on Missed Connections too.

ParticipantThis morning I found the rear light that fell off on the way home yesterday — on the bumpy descent from TR bridge, just as I suspected.

Try Jefferson Dr. (eastbound) and Madison Dr. (westbound). Jefferson is usually one of the more pleasant parts of my morning ride.
I still have some permutations to try, but it seems the winner for time is TR Bridge to Virginia to Jefferson on the way there, then Madison to Virginia etc on the way home. Thanks for the tips. Those streets are even better than I expected and totally worth a slight detour. Thanks, generally brilliant forum wisdom!

ParticipantI saw an expired bunny on the side of the W&OD between Columbia Pike and George Mason. Anyone have an encounter with a rabbit?

Nope, but saw a dead rat on the W&OD right inbound before the East Falls Church Metro. That was a helluva rat!

ParticipantMy car-bike commute this morning took me from my free parking spot straight to my first meeting at the Commerce Dept. Haven’t been there in over 10 years, so had no idea about bike parking. Didn’t see any immediately apparent bike racks, so went across the street to the Ronald Reagan building where there were racks almost completely surrounded by motorcycles and scooters. I squeezed my bike in and went to my meeting. Bad idea. When I came out, my bike was completely hemmed in on all sides. Luckily a good samaritan came along and helped me lift my bike out over the top. Thanks friendly fellow cyclist!

Second day of commuting by car and it’s killing me! I have to do the morning kid drop-off this week and there seems to be no alternative to driving. My car commute takes me right by my bike commute route (MVT and 14th street bridge) and I see all of you there, enjoying the best biking weather of the year. This evening the MVT looked like a superhighway with all the pedestrian and bike traffic on there. Sigh…
If it makes you feel any better (and maybe it won’t) I’m in the same boat. I drive my son to school in the district most days, which either means I have to drag a bike along to ride from his school to my office, or I just park and metro. Either way, I see all the bikes on the W&OD as I drive along 66, and I lament my steel cage. I think my son is tired of hearing me sigh…

At 15, he’s a bit large for a trail-a-bike, but he’s not ready (in my opinion) for a 23 mile one way bike commute every day, either. I could just throw him on metro every day, and do my own thing for commuting, but that isn’t terribly efficient.
The folding bike is getting more and more tempting, for many reasons, though. Last year I dragged my winter/backup bike along on the car, and I may get back to that (Freezing Saddles, anyone?) but for now, I’m running one way to pick up some of the exercise, and riding about once a week, on average.

I see a tandem in your future. After all, you can pilot solo after dropping him off.

Multi modal options? Bus with bikes on the front?

ParticipantI did my regular bike commute today – yay! Witnessed a scofflawntractor at the intersection of Maine avenue and Ohio drive, “blowing” through the light just as it turned red. But he did it at 2 miles per hour, in slow motion, to the great consternation of all the waiting cars. This reminded me of the interaction last week with a different lawnmower at the same intersection which actually SHOALED me as I was waiting at the light. And then proceeded to go through the intersection at 2 miles per hour. I got a good chuckle out of that one.

ParticipantAll things considered, it was basically a perfect morning for a bike ride.
Ohio Drive is closed to cars, but it seems clear that the USPP have no intention of blocking bikes/peds:
Some tourists were having fun taking photos with the shutdown signs at the Lincoln, so I figured I would too….
