I swear the lights on the cycletrack are timed so that you MUST stop at every one.
I can usually make it from 15th to 9th without a hitch, although you need to jump 9th with about 9 seconds to go in order to be able to make 7th and 6th. Take the lane from 6th to 3rd and you’ll just make it across.
If you thought heading east was bad, heading west is even worse!
I’ll also support the choice of Jefferson in the morning.

ParticipantI used to take Independence to and from the Capitol, but taking Jefferson in and Madison back are definitely better. A few observations. Although many do it, there is no need to go across Independence against the light while on 15th Street. You need to wait at the light at Jefferson and 14th Street whether you wait for the light at 15th and Independence or not, so there is nothing to be gained by being a scofflaw (yes, this is a pet peeve of mine). Second, you need to sprint from the light at 7th Street to make the light at 4th Street. This doesn’t need to be done, but it is fun. Finally, the speed limit on Jefferson and Madison is 15 mph, so it is easy to go the speed limit on a bike, especially on Jefferson because the wind usually blows east. Have fun counting how many cars pass you, including National Park Service police cars.

ParticipantSecond day of commuting by car and it’s killing me! I have to do the morning kid drop-off this week and there seems to be no alternative to driving. My car commute takes me right by my bike commute route (MVT and 14th street bridge) and I see all of you there, enjoying the best biking weather of the year. This evening the MVT looked like a superhighway with all the pedestrian and bike traffic on there. Sigh…

ParticipantYeah, you’re missing some of the best cycling weather of the year!

Participantmeh, I left the house in the dark wearing long pants, a long sleeve jersey, gloves with fingers and a light jacket (47 degrees out), along with a short sleeve jersey, a pair of shorts, and fingerless gloves in the bag (mid to upper 70s this afternoon). I like either 47 degrees or mid to upper 70s, but not both at the same time. The sunrise this morning was really nice, though.

Maybe you can rent the Arlington bike trolley? You could have the kids help pedal, and after dropping them off maybe you could find some slugs to help you get to work (I can’t imagine how hard it must be to pedal that thing all by oneself)!

That’s actually an awesome idea. Bike slug lines.

ParticipantME: Enjoying my morning ride. Surviving the slings and arrows of Cherrydale, so I think….
YOU: “Everything okay. Do you have what you need?”
ME: “Well, right about now I could use a stiff cup of hot coffee and a couple of toasted bagels if you have them”

DAMN YOU CHERRYDALE
(Trail culture is the best. Many people offered assistance…. well, except for that forum guy who went blowing by with his BA vest on
)

ParticipantWas awesome.
Stopped at HumpDayCoffeeClub and had a cappuccino with some nice folks, then rolled over to Hains with Dirt. What a beautiful morning.
Dickie you really don’t know what you are missing. There were zero cars and few other cyclists, great views of Rosslyn and airplanes taking off and landing. We were even able to ride two wide and hold a great conversation without angering drivers or other cyclists.

Sorry, but I find your Cherrydale curse amusing.

I don’t know what the Arlington bike trolley is, but maybe if I get enough people to help me pedal, I could get to work on time!
I actually went multi-modal today and it seems to be a winner. Put the bike in the back of the car, got the kids to school, drove to free parking and then 5 minute ride to work. Made it on time, saved myself 18 dollars and at least got to ride for 10 minutes today!
