Spectacular. Sunny, low humidity, low people count and arm warmers?? As opposed to ejwillis62 this is my version of August in heaven!
Got to agree with this one, except there were plenty of others out this morning including Dickie. I left about fifteen minutes earlier than usual, rode my Salsa road bike, and took advantage of the spectacular weather to cross the Potomac and add a Hains Point loop before recross the river and heading to work. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, just didn’t want to get off the bike!

ParticipantBeautiful morning. But there was a rider down between the Two Sisters, and an Arlington maintenance truck may have been involved. There were several people there to help so I didn’t stop, but the truck was parked on the trail and the cyclist was lying down nearby.

That is not a consensus position!

Strange…I think you usually aren’t more than 15 minutes behind me in the mornings, so that must’ve happend in the short window between when I rolled through and when you did.

Yes, one of the stopped cyclists was still on the phone getting help when I went through.

http://www.strava.com/activities/74614252That is my favorite route to work. I get to work all covered in dirt and smiley whenever I take it. I avoided it today though because 1) I just cleaned my bike in advance of a little touring next week and 2) I would have been way to tempted to head west on the C&O when I hit it instead of making the turn east and to the office!

What do you do when you get to the bridge? Cross over to the sidewalk on the opposite side, or stay in the lane? If the former, is it easy to do with the traffic?

I take the sidewalk on the opposite side as that puts you at the ramp down to the C&O. I think if you stayed in the lane you’d be forced into getting onto Canal road or Clara Barton.

If I am on my road bike, I go all the way to the end of the bridge and continue left about about 50 feet until the guardrail ends. Then I wait for traffic to either clear or stop at the light and pick my bike up and cross to the other side. Then I carry my bike up the hill to the CCT. It’s kind of terrifying once you cross Clara Barton because there is no shoulder and you have to backtrack about 20 feet to get to the trail entrance to go uphill. But it feels badass whenever I do it, so that makes up for it.

I cut over at the bend near 41st st this morning. there was no traffic coming the opposite way and I hopped on the sidewalk before the light, then crossed in the crosswalk. In the future, I’ll probably stay in the lane and wait for the left turn arrow, then swing wide to ride up on the sidewalk to get over the bridge.
