… was interrupted by coffee and nice bikey people.

water bottle holder failure this morning. Dropped my coffee onto the road just after crossing a busy intersection with a bunch of cars behind me. Usually I’m accelerating and there are no problems. This time I slowed and hopped up on the sidewalk – the cars did not like that one bit! I don’t know why but honking always makes me mad, even when I know it’s a reasonable reaction. Plus, my Contigo mug now has road rash – I thought maybe both screws had backed out, but the Aluminum wire cage had totally broken the welds holding the cage to the mounting plate.
    😡
I decided to slow down and enjoy the day after that – it took a while to get out of the bad mood, but with a nice morning like this, I was smiling by the time I got to work!:D

This morning’s commute seemed quite relaxed, because traffic was light — all traffic. Automobile, bike and even pedestrian. Most of the bike traffic on the W&OD this morning seemed to be heading in the other direction, and I passed fewer runners than usual. Even the monuments and the mall seemed generally more peaceful than usual, except for a gaggle of students/interns on some sort of group tour.

All in all, very pleasant. Soon I get to see how it goes in the other direction.

I hate driving on the Interstate in the rain with trucks! 😡

At least yesterday I got some nice miles in on the Little Miami Scenic Trail in the middle od the drive! :D

… Was the very first ride on a brand new bike! Also, my fingers were freezing. Going to have to start wearing long finger gloves soon.

It’s great to be back riding to work, but the bad part of it is that it is riding to work. ;)

Dirt can vouch for the new bike, he was at Freshbikes when I picked it up last night. I will gather photographic evidence of actual use of said bike on the evening commute.

This morning, leaving the house, I almost felt cool. Another way to put that: It was incredibly pleasant riding in this morning. I was amazed how few other cyclists I encountered. The August vacation season must be in full swing.

Interesting, I was thinking the opposite. I saw lots of people out on bikes between 7 and 8 am on my 2/3 of the Arlington Loop.

I saw a ton of people on the Custis. Including a number who looked like nubes…

I saw fewer coming up the the stretch of the MVT I rode along this AM than I normally do. Thought there would be more since this is about the best weather one can ask for in DC in early August.

Between what we saw and what consularrider saw, contradictory anecdotal evidence is abound!

I was cold this morning, I am NOT SUPPOSED to be cold in August. I just hope this doesn’t mean winter is going to be even colder than last winter I cannot take it. I am trying to really build up the miles training for my climate ride and I need some really hot weather, since that is my favorite riding weather. I had to wear a jacket this morning. Not fair. Did anyone see the tree down on the Mount Vernon trail? It was a huge one. They had yellow police tap across the trail but I went under it. Wasn’t sure what to do but the biker ahead of me did it so I followed had to pick up the bike and climb over the tree. Glad I was on my road bike and not my heavy commuter. We shall see if they have cut it up for the ride home.

I come from Dunn Loring/ Vienna, so I don’t pass through Arlington until closer to 8:15-8:30. Perhaps everone else got up early today (and I was, I know, running a few minutes late)? The only place I thought there was the usual # of cyclists was at the Key Bridge crossing, and even that seemed a bit light. But obviously a few minutes difference in either direction can dramatically alter perceptions.
