ParticipantI overslept today and missed all the buses, so I rode in! It was awesome!
I have a new Bikenetic jersey! It is awesome! (Full zip is win. Plus a key pocket!)
I saw a guy with an alien head blinky on his backpack! That was awesome!
Then I saw a guy on an A/C Nature Boy! That was also awesome!
Then I got to work! That was less awesome.May 13, 2013 at 5:37 pm #969818CPTJohnC

I think my Bikenetic jersey is my favorite.
This morning’s ride was charmed, I think. I held an average rolling speed of 15MPH over the 19+ miles, which is awesome for me! I think I can take it easy on the way home.

ParticipantLast night I left home around 7:45 pm to go for a ride and was shocked to find the MVT clear of any bikers and only a few peds. I thought that was odd until I realized why….swarms of gnats so big and vast that I could hear them hitting my windbreaker, it was like biking through hail and seriously disgusting. And a very large white moth also got stuck inside my helmet requiring me to stop and shake it out. And I got bitten by something on my butt. So yeah, I was the crazy cyclist waving her hands and bobbing her head like a crazy person trying not to inhale unnecessary protein. Fortunately the bug count was far less on the DC side (RCP).
I don’t think I’m gonna survive riding thru cicadas. I think we should get NBC bonus points if we do.

ParticipantI’m definitely going to need some impact resistant bug goggles. And a squeegee.

ParticipantSee- no one believed or liked it when i posted about the cicadas…. I know one is gonna make me crash & do a bike-copter…. The crunching of cicadas as i ride….. I’m gonna need to hose or wire brush the goo off my tires.

ParticipantCapital Weather Gang posted a cicada map and, apparently, most of the immediate DC region should be relatively unaffected, as we fall in the Brood X zone rather than this year’s Brood II zone.

ParticipantHow far down do those vile little things burrow for their long naps? I would be more than happy to help dig up some lawns if we could eradicate the species from the east coast.

Vile little things? Try ’em broiled with sea salt and olive oil- they taste like hazelnuts. Mmmmmm crunchy….

Or perhaps with some fava beans and a nice chianti?

Everybody should have a goal!
I’d expect you won’t be able to get them all, and all they really do is sleep, eat and breed.

ParticipantOk, so trips down the MVT to Mt Vernon and out the W&OD to Purcellville stand the best chance of cicada crunching?

ParticipantWhat does the dark blue mean? I’m wondering if there is crossover or if they’re pretty definitive maps. I live about where red, blue and dark blue all seem to meet. The cicada triangle of doom apparently.

ParticipantIf everyone works together, we can get them all.
Today was the first commute back on my own bike in two weeks. It felt funny for the first mile or two after time on a rented bike and CaBi.

I think the dark blue is just the boundry between Virginia and Maryland.
