Yes, yes, yes, yes. He damaged your property and is required to make you whole again.
Glad you’re okay and that the damage to you was relatively minor.

So my first long bike commute and I was hit by a elderly gentleman going through a stop sign while I was making a left hand turn. Minor, minor injuries – just some nice road reminders on my left leg and arm. A lady called the police and a report was filed. He destroyed a expensive Arc’Teryx jacket and I want to have my bike double checked – do I get the police report and call his insurance?
Could have been a lot, lot worse. The one ride out of 200+ in the last year or two (I used to capital bike share to work) I forget to wear my helmet. Sigh….
YES. Drop the bike off at your local LBS and have them do a full once over/repair estimate. Definitely file a claim with the gentleman’s insurance.
DO NOT take chances with your bike. Small cracks, bends, whatever(especially on Alumium) can and may fail catastrophically. Steel is a bit more forgiving, but still not worth the risk. Bent chainstays/seatstays WILL ruin your day.

ParticipantI am sorry to hear it. It is unnerving and sometimes terrifying.
Here is the bike forum information on bicycle accidents.
http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?3281-What-to-do-if-you-have-had-a-Bicycle-Accident
It links to a WABA forum that you might want to print and carry with you – or put on your smart phone if you carry one. Yes, treat a bike-car accident like a car-car accident. Get reports, witnesses, photos, evidence – and then contact insurance.

Yes, nothing more important to brag about than a state where cars don’t have to have brakes.
Cyclists brag all the time about bicycles that don’t have brakes.

ParticipantThanks for all the tips guys. It was my first time ever being hit – fortunately a witness made me call the police. (I wasn’t really thinking strait at the time and almost rode away). I was also very lucky that A) I just have road rash and
The police gave the driver a ticket and found him at fault. Took my bike Revolution for an estimate and at their recommendations I will be contacting Figure Engineering in Manassas about a paint estimate (It’s a 2001 Lemond Zurich – one of the last years they made a USA made Reynolds 853 bike – can’t stand looking at it with missing chunks of paint
).
Next is to submit everything to their insurance and hope for the best.
The positive side of things was, it being my first long commute on my bicycle, I think I’m hooked. There was some elderly person on the W&OD trail walking and waving at everyone as they rode by and it was nice to see everyone waving back. So much more pleasant then sitting in traffic .
Now to get a few others hooked in my office. Unfortunately it will be a little tough after what happened on Friday – but from talking to them I think I’ll be able to get at least 3 others on board 😎

I’m glad you’re ok, kudos for sticking with the commute after that kind of start.

ParticipantHeavy police presence at TR Island – southern half of parking lot blocked – MVT blocked along northern half of parking lot by news cameras. Police have all times of equipment there. I thought maybe it was a follow up of yesterday’s filming – but twitter says that the police think the missing woman from National Airport might be on the island.
This was my first ride back after catching the plague. A slow slow ride. Where did everyone go?? I didnt see anyone on the trail. Is 52 degrees the new “too cold to ride”??

Saw plenty on the road, just no one I knew.

My first thought was that it was the missing woman (hopefully she’s okay, that situation sounded pretty awful)…totally forgot about the movie. I found it interesting that the Park Police tell cyclists to ride on the path, but then when they have a news crew, allow them to set up ON the path, forcing cyclists into the parking area.
I think the potential rain scared some away this morning, although I’d say the number of riders I saw was high. It was sprinkling for most of the ride though, but cleared up by the time I hit Rosslyn.

ParticipantDespite my usual aversion to riding in rain, I biked this morning. I don’t think I got any wetter than usual, though I expect the ride home won’t do the dirt on my bike any favors.

ParticipantBiked in with no rain, got a bit of a sprinkle about 2 miles from home (of 20) on the way back. Lucky day.

ParticipantSaw two loons (the swimming bird variety) in the Potomac just upstream of the 14th St bridge this morning about 8:30AM. I’ve never seen them in this area before.
(Must be on their way up north.)Sorry, just had to tell someone.

ParticipantLittle digital biker on my Garmin course beat me by 15 minutes today. The little slacker, however, didn’t take the scenic route, so he didn’t climb the Rosslyn hills along the Custis (though he did 41st Street at 12 mph like he ALWAYS does…showoff). I don’t feel too bad though. He only rode 13 miles to my 18.
What a little cheater…:p -
