Who? Me? I used to think “Chris Randall can ride as far as he wants, I’ll just ride a little bit farther than that.” Maybe he was thinking the same thing about me, but I doubt it. All I know is no matter how much I ride, he rides a little bit farther and a whole lot faster. And I’m really sorry he won’t be able to ride for the next five or six weeks. Bike Arlington All Stars lost our MVP today, as the warm-up period is coming to a close. Chris was on track to get 5000 points (diamond level) in the warm-up period (Feb-Apr) and had a good shot at finishing first for that period.
Chris, take care of that ankle. Get well soon. You’ll be back as strong as ever.

Participantconsularrider: That sucks!
It’s really no fun being off the bike, especially when you’re used to it being such a regular part of your day! (I’ve been taking it easy for a few weeks with some sort of shoulder/arm problem and x-rays didn’t show much, but I think it’s in the joints/nerves anyway. I’m taking my painkillers with me to Kill Bill.)

This morning’s commute was over before it started. I was switching the bike I was going to ride and coming down a step, I caught my foot and twisted my ankle. At the ER thry told me the x-ray shows an avulsion fracture, and that I’ll be off the bike for six to eight weeks.
Hope you heal up quickly!

ParticipantAnd with that, the Bike Arlington All Stars mileage goes down by at least half. Or…. I feel a disturbance in the force, as if a 1000 mile riding ankle called out in anguish!
Sucks. Get better. Behavior yourself.

ParticipantOh NO! Just saw this. I’m so sorry, Chris! Let us know if we can do anything for you or if you’d like to get together with some biking friends at any point. I hope the time goes fast and the healing is complete!

What’s an avulsion fracture? From Wikipedia:
An avulsion fracture is a bone fracture which occurs when a fragment of bone tears away from the main mass of bone as a result of physical trauma. This can occur at the ligament due to the application forces external to the body (such as a fall or pull) or at the tendon due to a muscular contraction that is stronger than the forces holding the bone together. Generally muscular avulsion is prevented due to the neurological limitations placed on muscle contractions. Highly trained athletes can overcome this neurological inhibition of strength and produce a much greater force output capable of breaking or avulsing a bone.
No “average” person could do that, so I think that makes you bada**. I hope you heal in full so you can get back on your bike again!

ParticipantThanks for all the good wishes. The orthopedist doesn’t think it is as bad as was first diagnosed yesterday. Aircast for the next two weeks with light weight bearing as tolerated and I can probably start spinning on our recumbent stationary bike as the swelling goes down. He estimated six weeks to get me back to where I was.

ParticipantReally pretty morning to get dirty with Hozn (that sounds bad…)
Playing with the Strava/Instagram connection yielded some photos of a stoic Hozn in the dark:

ParticipantThe highlight of my embarrassingly late morning commute today was finally meeting Dirt (and Jimmy) who stopped to say hi and snap a picture.
