It was Cyndi and Pete’s fault, they made me get in a truck and DRIVE to Leesburg to ride Loudoun County gravel, taste mead, and drink wine. Riding there would have added 60+ miles to a 47 mile ride (like there’s something wrong with that?).

Alas, I was in Houston – where even people who don’t drive have cars.

I had the occasion to drive by NASA Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston this morning. The parking lot had a bunch of bike racks and bikes left in the parking lot. It seems that drivers might leave a utility bike so they can get around the campus more easily.

The fact that they are rocket scientists probably helped in coming up with that strategy.

When I worked at the Denver Federal center the GSA head honcho bought a bunch of little electric car/golfmobile things for their staff to cruise around in. She touted it as a huge green initiative.

I thought if they’d kept the old GSA bicycles from the 60s in service that would have been more greener and better for the GSA employees. They had some really cool old bikes that no one used.

GSA is one of my favorite agencies to bash. And they deserved it on that one. It was before their big party in Las Vegas screwed travel up for everyone.

    Crazy Ivan cyclist?
So, heading eastbound on the Custis, I come around the blind curve after the s-curve of doom, and a cyclists not far in front (less than halfway to the curb cut before the wall) of me (same direction I was headed) stops, shuffles the bike into the other direction and slowly starts up again. Really? Just after a blind curve? I saw the cyclist the instant I came around the curve and started dinging my bell. She eventually noticed that there were others on the trail, at least, there was a deer in headlights look rather than, say, speeding up the turn or getting off the trail to do it. I did comment as I went past her that it was a bad place to turn around, but I doubt she heard (I think I saw earbuds).

There was no obvious reason to change direction there, other than REALLY wanting to go back up the S-curve to bike down it again. It looked more like it was just time to turn around.

I love the fact that so many people are cycling. I hate the fact that there are so many people cycling (and doing dumb things and being in my way).

Otherwise, it was a nice, albeit humid, commute.

Turn your #&*%^#&*^% flashers off on the trail at 8:15 a.m., the sun’s been up for an hour plus. Other than that and one high speed pass non-caller, it was a very well behaved morning. Not even any shoalers on the L Street cycletrack.

Maybe she just realized she forgot something. (Been there, done that. But not that: she should have just rolled into the parking lot where she could easily swing around).

How exciting! I had my first-ever CCT sighting of Carol Calhoun, who I wished a good morning to.

Exactly the problem and why I commented as I went by.

A member of Pi Kappa Phi appears to have dropped the fraternity manual in the middle of the road in West Potomac Park near the softball fields. I picked up the manual and put it on the side of the road. I feel like there’s a joke here but I’m too tired to make one.

There was a traffic jam on the CCT this morning, riders taking pictures of the mist rising off the waters and a pair of rowers cutting through it.

We must’ve passed each other! I’m one of the rare outbound CCT riders. Those people had to be in some kind of caravan, right? Can’t imagine that many riders all deciding to stop and take a photo at the exact same time just by coincidence.

I maybe would’ve benefited from pulling out the wind vest and full-finger gloves this morning, but otherwise a beautiful day for a bike ride!

For the second time in a week, yesterday a cyclist asked me for help putting a chain back on the rings. Not shaming, just surprised.
