ParticipantI am sorry I missed out on that. Sounds dramatic! I am probably not gonna be able to build my cx wheels by weds (waiting on the right size spoke nipples), but I can do cx every day next week!
. Or I could be slow and ride my mtb on weds.

Huh, that’s a new one (for me) the app looks pretty cool but do you have to whip out your phone to shoot the segments (while riding…) or can you upload a video file from say a contour?

You have to pull out your phone, unfortunately. Most of the shots I got were not while riding. Basically you just open the app, and when in record mode, touch the screen to record. Once you stop touching the screen it stops recording, until you have 6 seconds of recording, which is the length of Vine videos. It wasn’t too hard, because you can just lock the phone, not exit the app, which means when you unlock you are still in the record mode.
At least now I know exactly how my phone will break.

ParticipantNot nearly as cool but you can at least see that I had a delightfully dirty commute…

I’m not missing it either – because it was blowing in my face southbound yesterday afternoon. Stupid air pressure variance.

GuestMy morning commute was by car again today, after 3 whole days of commuting by bike. In those 3 days I learned that 1) I do, in fact, covet y’all’s commutes just as much as I thought I did; and 2) I am slow. Very slow. In 3 days of 26 miles per day during normal commuting hours, I passed a total of one (1)* cyclist. I was passed by many. Weekends may be more crowded, but they are better for my delusions of speed. I actually get to pass people sometimes.
*I am not counting the family of four with two 5-6 year olds on bikes that I passed on the way home yesterday afternoon, or the commuting couple I passed yesterday morning only because they stopped to gawk at nature.

ParticipantI had a meeting at one of my kid’s school yesterday morning so I thought I should make it a car day. We finished at 9am and I stopped by Sweet Leaf in McLean to get some breakfast to go. I was on the road by 9:20am. I got to work at 10:45am.
On my slowest bike days I get in faster than that. I don’t see how people do it every day.

ParticipantNo commute for me this morning…got to spend the day inside while ArlCo noisily worked on repaving Longfellow St. and workers noisily installed interior drains in my basement. But I did get to take my R3 into FreshBikes…turns out I’m not crazy and the bottom bracket did need replacing, under warranty, thankfully.

1) I’m glad you got a chance to commute by bike! Lovely weather for it and a nice route. Kudos! You could have thrown in a Hains Point loop or two for bonus points, maybe next time…
2) Team Ten is not slow. We’re fuel efficient! There are a lot of speedy commuters coming in from VA, but I’m sure there are many going the same speed as you. You don’t see them because they aren’t passing you and you aren’t passing them. Don’t worry about. When I rode with you, I didn’t feel like we were going slow.
OK, if you’re slow, I’m slower. DFL in most of the races I entered, close to last on most of the Strava segments I’ve ridden. You have a bunch of Strava QOMs, my only KOMs are on segments I created myself and no one else has ridden yet!
Haha

I’m slow too. But I blame my bike for my slowness. Always passed by people on those curvy handlebar things. I’m piddling along on my flat bar hybrid. It has to be the bike…right? If only I had one with curly bars I could pass all of them! To make myself feel better, when I get passed I just sit up straight on my upright hybrid and start humming to myself like I’m just out enjoying nature. Nobody needs to know that inside I’m angrily seething that I was just passed by someone twice my age going twice my speed with what looks to be half the effort.

AH-HA. I believe I have detected my mistake. I rode the wrong bike! If only I had ridden the one with the curvy handlebars, I would have been passing everybody!

My first job out of college, I was commuting from Fairfax City to NW DC. I hadn’t started bike commuting yet. It was a 25 minute drive with no traffic. On the way home (and I left at 4), it was stop and go almost the entire way and it took an hour on a good day, two and a half on a bad. After about a year of that I swore I would never have a commute like that again.
