Fact check: true.
To be fair, there are hills all over the place. If I tried an incline-avoidy commute (for example, if I don’t want to climb/descend on ice), I could get as far as the exit of my building. I wouldn’t do this even with studded tires, for fear of catching an acute case of the death.

Acute, and potentially permanent.

ParticipantMy morning commute was interrupted by a car that somehow thought that it could squeeze onto the Capital Crescent Trail. (See 4:15 or so in the video.)

Seen another way, it’s a miracle that more people don’t drive on the trails, especially motorcyclists. So, this is probably an early sign of the breakdown of social order and the collapse of civilization as we know it.

ParticipantLots of police by the MVT in Alexandria today. I saw 4 between Tulane and Slaters Lane. Not sure if this was just coincidence since it crossed a few jurisdictions between Fairfax, NPS and Alexandria City. One was at Dyke Marsh, another by Jones Point, and 1 along the more traily-area in Old Town, and 1 on S. Union St. They didn’t appear to be doing stop sign enforcement or anything as I failed come to a complete “foot down” stop right in Old Town in front of one since I didn’t see them until too late, but they were there… watching…

ParticipantGenerally a good commute. However, there was an oddity. When coming down the ramp from Rosslyn to the Roosevelt Island lot (~7:20am), there was a Park Police car at the bottom with no one in it. I look over to my left and there was a car that had driven off the tarmac and into the trail that starts under the ramp. As I drove by, the police were slamming the trunk shut – no dead body or large collection of anything was visible. There were no other people around, so I gather it was an abandoned vehicle.
Anyone know any more?

I went through closer to 7:00 and the car was there, but no police yet. Seems lots of people are looking for novel ways to get off the GWMP.

To their credit, APD has been using their increased resources to do more traffic enforcement and even regular patrols are encouraged to do the same thing. I saw them along the Potomac Yard Trail doing speed enforcement on Potomac Ave last night.
In Virginia, the stop sign law does not require “foot down,” this coming from the head of the enforcement division himself and he uses this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKmwKP5ZRtQ to guide their discretion on enforcement of stop signs. In a nutshell, slow down to a walking pace and yield to anyone else in the intersection or crosswalk, and you will likely not earn a ticket. If that is what you did on Union, they were using their discretion as they said they would.

ParticipantThe sun is finally coming up early enough for me to witness actual sunrises. This happy coincidence seems to last for about a week a season, and often corresponds to rainy periods. There was much rejoicing.

ParticipantFriend was coming up the CCT toward Bethesda this morning, when he noticed one cyclist going the opposite direction trying to pass another one much too closely. Shortly after, he heard the sounds of a collision. There were enough people around helping that he didn’t feel he was needed, and he wanted to avoid being late to our meeting, so he didn’t stay. However, if one of you was the one hit, and needs a witness, let me know and I can put you in touch with him.
