And the wind cries “vented softshell.” :)

Of all of Hendrix’s songs about softshells, this my favorite one. I have a vented softshell from Showers Pass that has massive side vents with zippers that are easy to operate with my lobsters on. Great jacket. Works well on days like today on down to the coldest days.

I had the same experience with a pair of Keen cycling sandals I bought years ago. I think my feet are D width, and the keens were really narrow and made my feet ache. After a few uses, they have been sitting idly in my basement. I have no idea if they updated them so that they are wider nowadays.

You guys really need to give up on Keens and go with Kugats. They are much greater than Keens.

If you were to think about changing your mind, don’t, as I’ve decided that Compass Coffee right now while the weather is nice is better than Vigilante Coffee when it might be raining and I need to get home to let the dog out before huskerdüdü. I’ll be there Friday and Baked and Wired though.

You meant a Baked Joint at 440K St NW, right? It will otherwise be a one man Coffee Club.

That’s the one. Not sure what I was thinking; maybe I’m eternally baked.

I keep meaning to get to that one. And then I think about the prospect of getting up at 5:00 AM to get to it…

What time do you have to be at work? This coffee club is a pretty late crowd. Lots of people arriving around 8 when I’m leaving.

I may try for that. Work’s at least a little flexible on arrival times. And I work quite close to there.

Can I just come here and gripe? This morning, one of my wheel lights fell off, so I had to stop and put it back on.

Then the Capital Crescent Trail seemed even bumpier than usual, so I got off to see what was wrong, and discovered the tire was flat. I tried to fill it up at the pump at the bottom of the trail, but it wouldn’t fill.

So I took the bike up to the nearby bike shop, which was not yet open.

I decided to go to the nearby Starbucks to get breakfast while I was waiting. While I was in there, someone asked where N Street was. The barista couldn’t tell her. Umm, we’re on M Street–you seriously don’t know where N Street is?

I go back to the bike shop, and find out what happened to the tire. When I last had the wheel replaced, they had put in a tube with a Presta valve. I had thought at the time that was odd, because I’ve always had Schraeder valves before, but figured maybe the new wheel would only take Presta valves. It turned out, the wheel was supposed to take Schraeder valves, but the hole for the valve had a little burr that made the Schraeder valve not fit. Rather than filing off the burr, or using a different wheel, the bike shop had just used a Presta valve. Of course, the Presta valve was too small for the hole, plus the burr was still there, so the whole valve had just broken off.

Then I arrived at the office, and made myself some coffee. And the lid was defective, so the coffee is leaking out of it.

Can I have a redo of this morning?

Re-do granted. Go home and try again tomorrow.

There are Schraeder to Presta Valve grommets that you can put in your rim. Maybe they should give you one ;)

I don’t really need one at this point, since it now has a Schraeder valve. And I’m not sure of the point of the thing in the first place. If you have a Schraeder valve rim, why not use a Schraeder valve, instead of a Presta valve with an adapter?

Isn’t that what the little round nut on the presta stem is for?

The little round nut may keep the Presta valve from retreating to the inside of the wheel. But it definitely doesn’t prevent breakage, as I discovered today.

The few times I’ve used those grommets/adapters is when I had 1 wheelset that had Schraeder valve holes, but all my other bikes had Presta valve rims. Instead of buying some Schraeder tubes and some Presta tubes, I’d just buy all Presta tubes because they’d be compatible with all the wheels. I had the same problem as you did in that the base of the valve would self-destruct if I used the Presta tube in the Schraeder rim.

    Sorry, forgot the tags.

Seriously, if you use 2 of those round nuts, one on either side of the schrader hole, you should be golden.
