I passed the Tuesday Hills Crew on Glebe this morning on my moto (heading in the opposite direction). Made me very jealous, but I’ve been restricted from riding due to having my wisdom teeth cut out of my face last week…but I should be fine to start riding again tomorrow.
You ride with your TEETH?

Even I am not old enough yet to leave my teeth at home when I ride. Though there is definitely pavement in the region where that sounds like a good idea.

ParticipantEnormous amount of traffic on the Custis this morning. Not just the High School cross-country training camp, but many cyclists in-bound as well for such an early hour, including, unfortunately, an elite pathlete passing down the middle near the bridge to nowhere.
Felt like a nice Saturday afternoon on the MVT.

And Unicycle Dude was back! Haven’t seen him ages.

I passed him just before the W&OD/Custis intersection, about 6:45am.

If we are Unicycle Dude spotting, he was returning later. I was headed east on the Custis and passed him as he completed the second of the two sisters heading west between 7:15 and 7:20. Very impressive. Those hills aren’t fun on two wheels.

ParticipantSince the rear derailleur on the carbon roadbike decided to confess its love for my rear spokes on Friday (which resulted in a very dramatic love explosion of carbon derailleur cage and spokes in the middle of the road), today I pulled out fixie 2 and converted it to a SS (cause I love coasting way too much). Gearing was a bit too low, but otherwise it was a lovely ride in.

ParticipantThe scene: About 8:30 this morning, on Jefferson Dr. in front of the Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building.
Me: sprinting to make the light at Jefferson Dr. and 7th St., and also incidentally cat6-ing with the rider who shoaled me at the last intersection.
The action: I felt/heard something fly off my bike. I turned my head just in time to see something red flying through the air, so I figured that my taillight had made a dash for freedom.
The good news: I was able to circle back and pick up the scattered pieces of my light before a car ran over them. And the light still worked fine after I reassembled it.
The bad news: The plastic bit that locks the light into the mount broke off, so I need to find a new way to attach the light to my bike.
The worse news: Silliest reason for a DNF ever. I was totally winning the cat6 race up until that point.

Shoaling – http://bikedc.wikia.com/wiki/ShoalThe word shoal makes me think of horses for some reason.

ParticipantI teleworked today, which is a very rare thing for me, but it didn’t stop me from getting the usual 10 miles in by pedaling around and hitting Crystal City Coffee Club in the morning. Coffee Club was well attended this morning. A very friendly bird played on the table most of the morning and even flew on to my hand for a piece of muffin. First time attendance from Lauren who said she knows Tommy.

Interesting. I always thought of Cat6 as being exclusively a commuter race. Non-commuting “racers” would just be pathletes in my book.

ParticipantOh, I think cat6 is any racing when you don’t have a number pinned on. Well, particularly on MUPs. Racing for some sprint point on a group ride isn’t really cat6ing.
(At least, I have never assumed it was related to commuting; that just happens to be when I am riding on MUPs around other cyclists.)

ParticipantWhile I did not wake up early enough to go to HDCC (I have yet to attend, even though it’s close to my morning commute as I ride Beauregard-Walter Reed-W&OD, but I promise before the end of summer that I will go to at least ONE!), I did have a pleasant ride.
I brought my insulated water bottle instead of my normal clear plastic bottle, and about 2.5 hours after having arrived at work, I was surprised to discover that the ice I had put in it before my ride had still not completely melted! Usually, when I use my regular clear plastic bottle, the contents are liquid before I even hit Beauregard/Seminary (about a mile into my commute). I will have to remember to use the insulated bottle more often.
