    Fancy e-bike?

I can’t tell if there are pedals, but this is what will cause all ebikes to be banned. Come on people don’t be this stupid.

To the rider in the orange Tennessee jersey this morning: You rock.

In what was a stroke of incredible luck, I hit 1,000 miles for the month of June exactly as I pulled in to Hump Day Coffee Club. Unfortunately I woke up late today so I didn’t get a full coffee club in.

And then Komorebi tried to kill me on the morning convoy by pedaling fast for my tired legs.

Looks like Smithsonian is setting up for the annual Folklife Festival on the National Mall, but no road closures yet. I guess I’ll see this evening if they start blocking off roads. I recall last year it was just the block between 3rd and 4th St. but cyclists had no trouble riding through.

    Beautiful, gnat-free morning.

Wow, this morning was nice. Cool enough to be refreshing and not sweat too much, but not so cool as to be chilly in any way.

That reminds me to pick up a 2nd moisture-wicking cycling cap, for my upcoming stint as an everyday bike commuter instead of just 2x a week – thanks to SafeTrack. REI has a couple on sale for $11:

I got an ArtCrank cap last year on closeout from REI. It does a decent job wicking sweat for most of my 1-hr commute ride, although towards the end, a little sweat gets on my face as the cap saturates. The visor is great for both sun glare and keeping rain from falling on the wrong side of my glasses. If I position the cap right, under my helmet, I can flip the visor too when I don’t need it – if I don’t the helmet makes the visor go back down, lol.

Ran into LeprosyStudyGroup on the commute in this morning. It was the perfect storm of me leaving late and LSG leaving on time for work.

Strava says I passed Gillian while she was stopped at the Arlington Cemetery Metro entrance… at like 9:30 this morning.

Ha ha. I went in to trade in paperfarecards… but was foiled by the fact that the ANC station didn’t have any of the right machines. And I was so proud of myself for remembering to trade them in (not to worry – I was successful on my lunchtime run to the Foggy Bottom station).

Anyone, I locked my bike to a sign near the escalators, but pretty much in the bushes because THERE IS NO BIKE PARKING.

Yeah, there’s one mountain bike that’s always locked to a lamp post, but definitely no bicycle infrastructure at ANC Metro… they really really don’t like bikes, apparently.

Canada Geese are like tourists when it comes to trails and bike bells.

They both wander aimless on and off the trail, often just standing on it. If they hear bike bells, they haven’t a clue as to what they mean. A few will look towards the sound, but still not understand what it means. Then will move at the last second and sometimes hiss at you in the process.

I will say that the goslings are getting to look like gangling teenagers right now. Ducklings still seem to be in the cute stage.

Unrelated, but as I was passing DCA (heading southbound), I heard a plane coming in from behind me for a landing (normal sound) and suddenly the engines made a different sound and the plane was going up again. While I have been on more than one plane that has had to abort a landing, that was the first I have seen from the ground. I gather there was a plane still on the runway at the other end, although it could have been due to the grouping at the near end.

The geese will hiss at you, but they’re also less clueless, so it evens out.

They seem to respond better to you honking at them than to the sound of a bike bell (or an “on your left” call). Get a bugle klaxon type horn.

You: Hipster dude wearing ironically retro faux-Ray Bans cycling across Memorial Bridge while smoking a cigarette.

Me: Following behind you waiting for a chance to pass, stuck in ample smoke clouds that seemed impossibly abundant. I felt like the coal tender trailing a steam locomotive.

Thanks for my daily dose of secondhand smoke!
