Speaking totally hypothetically, is it bad to keep riding if you might have a broken rib or two?

Ouch. I hope this is “totally hypothetical,” as you say.
I rode every day through my cracked ribs this past November. I’d injured them once before, so I knew what I was in for…
-Like Tim and Sunyata note, the breathing can be painful. Not just the deep breaths… the shallow ones too.
-It gets much worse before it gets better. Give it a few days and you’ll be really suffering. Sorry.
-It’s easy to feel freaked out, ‘cause the ribs are so close to your heart and lungs. It helps to know the pain is normal and ribs DO mend.
-Broken ribs leave you feeling very vulnerable and risk-averse for the few weeks while they are healing…wary of every little pothole.
-Use ice for a couple days, and then switch to a hot water bottle.

    Hope you’re okay. w&w

Not my first rodeo, though the last time it was combined with a broken pelvis, so taking it easy was mandatory and the pain was a drop in the bucket compared to a broken pelvis.

And you know what they say about using a mirror?
Once you have one, you never look back.

Pretty sure I told you that one on a Tri360 ride going up Kirby…

As long as there is no risk of the broken rib puncturing a lung, you will be fine.

The biggest issue is pain tolerance. So if you are not in much pain and can take a fairly deep breath (say 70% lung capacity) without screaming, go ride. Just no falling. :p

Well, I did keep riding because I believe everything I read on the internet. In truth, you can keep riding with a busted rib or two, and it will hurt just like W&W said. The pain ramped up days 2-5, plateaued for a day or two, and is starting to drop.

Perhaps, but I originally heard that one before Tri360 even existed. Fair enough then, we both get dinged for failing to acknowledge some long forgotten original source.

As long as Bob and that Peter guy aren’t around to argue about it, I think we’re okay.

Are you two really trying to take credit for the oldest joke in cycle nerd-dom?

Not credit for it–just who told who about it first.

    Poor Steve O, right?

gorgeous weather… got out my vintage road bike… and realized that it’s too small :( I’ve always known this, but I never remember when I hop on it.
Then hopped back on the fixed gear, realized how nice it is to switch things up. I’m itching for that N+1 to be finished so I can pop it into the rotation. one PF30 BB and a few hours with some tools and I should have it ready.

Missing my Abus lock. I have a backup, but that folding lock was pretty nice.

Well, I knew I’d fall off my bike someday during my commute, and today was my (un)lucky day. I turned onto a curb-cut to access the sidewalk and must have hit the cut wrong or nailed a rock or something… Luckily for the bike’s frame my body acted as a barrier between it and the sidewalk, but the handlebars impacted the pavement and now the left shifter has moved into a unusable position. So off to Capitol Hill Bikes over lunch. Hopefully all they have to do is move the shifter back–I’ll be ticked if I need new shifters or a new handlebar.

I now have a bruise the size of Texas on my left thigh, some scratches on my calf, my elbow is has some road rash and my hand is bruised. Overall not too bad–I’ve fallen much worse before, and I somehow didn’t land on my left hip which is getting surgery next month so that’s a serious win. But still. ouch. And it was in a very public spot so my pride is a little damaged ;).

Otherwise lovely commute this morning! I love spring weather.

But the real question is, did anyone witness this? That hit to your pride can hurt worse than the physical pain…

Oh yea. One jogger stopped to check on me, and it was a busy road filled with cars.

Take good care of that road rash or your surgeon may want to delay your surgery if there is any sign of infection near the incision site.
