ParticipantBeware of the underpass where the Four Mile Run train goes under W. Glebe Road (between the Interstate and the Mt. Vernon underpass). Last night I had to turn back due to water. This morning I discovered that the flood had left a thick, SLICK AND SLIPPERY deposit of mud. I regretted not having fenders for my dress pants and shoes but navigated it fine. It could, however, be a danger, especially if still there after dark. Most of us use the descent to the underpass to pick up speed. Not a good choice right now.

ParticipantMy office moved to Rosslyn from L’Enfant Plaza, this morning was my 2nd commute. First was Monday. Mt V between the 14th St Bridge and Key Bridge still has muddy slick spots and standing water. The river is very high right now.
It felt good to get back on the bike but it’s going to take a while to get used to riding for longer – 10 miles each way vs 5. Not insurmountable – faster than Metro (#metrosucks) and faster than yesterday’s drive, oh, and cheaper.
Thinking of going the electrified route. My last mile on the return is a 380 ft climb up Good Hope Road to Skyland.

ParticipantAfter allowing myself to become demotivated all week, I finally decided to get back to commuting this morning, only to discover it was a bit colder and windier than I expected. I headed out determined to see how bad it was and bail to multimodal if need be – the cold was tolerable, but the wind meant that it would be a long struggle up the MVT so after descending the hill to Shirlington I bailed and hopped on the 7 bus to DC (7Y?), also cause I have not done the crosstown thing in a while. Got off at Constitution and 22nd, rode the mall paths to 14th street, then Jefferson to 4th to Eye SW, and rode the newly opened block of Eye with its newly extended bike lane (from NJ to 3rd SE) for the first time.

Go Team 19! I also dragged myself out early and went to Java Shack, intercepted by the caravan at Jackson St. BTW I find it really helps to hum our team theme song, “Hey, Nineteen” for motivation! Also, pie. The sour cherry pie went fabulously well with a latte.
Great to see the Friday crew, and grateful for these sunny mornings.

Great to finally meet you! Thanks for making it out. See you next week?

ParticipantYou’re in a meeting with the Big Bosses and make a pitch that goes over pretty well! Your part in the meeting being done, you sit back and cross your legs. That’s when you notice that there’s a big reflective strap on your ankle. And it’s velcro, so discreetly slipping it off is out of the question.
Pop quiz hotshot–what do you do?

Step #1: Get time machine to return to before meeting.
Step #3: Use silent Velcro (as seen in the movie Garden State) for all your strappage needs for quiet removal.

I have no way to relate to this.

Step #4: Use time machine again, this time to go back and erase “Step #2” from your original post?

Assume that what you’re saying is more important than what you’re wearing. Realize that you’ll look like an idiot if you play with it during the meeting and uncross your legs. Start wearing it daily because you need to own that. 😎

Did you mean: “Make idle chitchat with coworker and fiddle with your phone and notes to make sure you’re the last to stand up and leave following meeting”? Because that was my preferred approach!

I haven’t yet explored the neighborhood… is District Taco a regular meetup?

ParticipantThis morning was my third commute to this location – and the first time recording on Strava. It’s shorter than I was expecting looking at Google Maps… 8.6 vs an even 10. I wonder why. https://www.strava.com/activities/505379482/overview
I just found flybys on Strava… pretty amazing. I passed Ford on his way from Glover Park to Mt. Vernon, I passed Abby as she made her way from Falls Church to downtown, and at the same place I passed Melinda as she got into the city after starting in Reston.
I crossed against a signal coming off of the S. Capitol St bridge as the cross traffic on Potomac Ave was almost all turning on to the bridge… which was a mistake because one car decided to go straight and the intersection is basically gravel. My braking of course made me skid all over the place and I was able to unclip before I went over entirely, but felt very foolish. Next time I wait for the walk signal.
