Yesterday morning, as I emerged dripping in my riding gear from the garage elevator, I was greeted with a cheery “So, did you bike in today”?
Had to bite my tongue a little.
Still better than the metro or driving is my usual response

Or appetite control, for that matter.

ParticipantOther than the wet roads, this morning was about as good as a winter commute gets.

More cowbell.

That and take away the slight northwest breeze, but then that would be perfection and during the winter I’m happy to take anything approaching it. I didn’t even have any cars pull any stunts at all. Maybe winter will stay this way until Spring (I dream).

ParticipantThe rain was light enough that merely tilting my head down a little allowed the visor to keep my glasses dry. Everything was generally fine, though the legs were a bright pink colour when I showered. While the numbers seemed a bit lower than usual, there were still plenty of riders out.

Totally agree on the Northwave boots. I just went on an 11 mile lunchtime ride, purposefully riding through all the snow and slop I could find (the golf course was good for that!), and while the rest of me was soaked, my feet were quite dry when I got home. The Northwave boots are the best bike related purchase that I’ve made in a long time.
More praise for the Northwave boots…My feet were completely dry when I got to work today, and the same was true last Tuesday when I rode through the slopfest to get to work. Cavaet is my rain pants have a flap that covers the top of the boot, so the top doesn’t get saturated. But, nothing is coming up through the bottoms and sides of the boots – no moisture through the cleats. These boots are amazing.

Participant…was in a car. I’d hide my head in shame except it was to White Marsh, Maryland from Alexandria. Sixty-one miles. It took me 2-1/2 hours. Let’s see…that’s averaging 24mph. If I just trained a bit more I could match that on a bike. I hate the Beltway.

ParticipantLots of cobblestones.

ParticipantDryer than yesterday, but just as mucky. The counter was in the teens yesterday but was #4 today; maybe because of possible T-storms tonight? I may try to leave early to get home before any lightning is about. Rain, snow, heat, cold, wind–all are doable, but I don’t like glaze ice and I don’t like lightning.

ParticipantThe rain picked up right as I left, so wetter than yesterday. But that 5 or so degrees of extra warmth made a huge difference. Also saw plenty of riders in my direction, including the helpful gentleman with the vaguely German accent who helped me when my headlight decided to make a break for freedom.

ParticipantLook out for downed branches! There was big one down on Westmoreland that was mostly perpendicular to the road, so in the dark–even with my headlights on–it was almost impossible to see until it was too late. The dark, damp pavement doesn’t really help either, as it’s great camouflage.

ParticipantPretty sure my front wheel skipped off or I rolled right over every single downed branch on the trail this am.

ParticipantIt was a challenge to miss all those branches in the dark. With my headlight though, I could just about do it by keeping it (and me) focused on where I was going.
Should be more of a challenge tonight riding into 35-mph gusting headwinds.

Watch for those downed trees, too! This is on the Holmes Run Trail near Chambliss St (I reported it to Call.Click.Connect) and posed a challenge for getting my bike through.
