I woke up feeling tired and grumpy this morning — enough so that I seriously considered foregoing my bike commute, rolling over for another hour of sleep, and taking the metro instead. But I did eventually get myself and my bike out the door, and it turned out to be one of those mornings that made me fall in love with my bike commute all over again.
— These days, I often don’t see another cyclist until a mile or more into my commute. Today, I saw my first rider all of 300 yards from my front door. Although I don’t think that he’s one of my commute regulars, he gave me a friendly wave. Both the greeting and the fluorescent yellow gloves (covet!) instantly lifted my spirits.
— I passed another cyclist near the southern end of the Potomac Ave. trail. She caught up with me waiting for the light at Potomac Ave. and Crystal Dr., and she asked if she could follow me into DC. She explained that she usually went around the Pentagon but was looking for a better route. So I showed her how to take the Tim Kelley service drive and Crystal City connector to the MVT. As we rounded the corner onto the CC connector, she exclaimed, “So this is how you do it!” That made me smile from ear to ear.
— While waiting for the light at Jefferson Dr. and 14th St., another rider and I had a friendly chat about how it would be great if D.C. would retime the lights there to make it more convenient for cyclists.
Thank you, community of fellow cyclists, for turning a “blah” start of the day into an amazing one.
