ParticipantSounds great. Astro Doughnuts near 13th and G has a good selection.

Lovely ride, which ended with my bike not fitting into my work’s bike rack anymore. I got full front and rear fenders installed yesterday, and there is no longer enough space between the front wheel and the fork to go over and hook into my work’s awful grid-style bike rack. Due to my frame and wheel size, locking it up this way is the only method to get the U-Lock through the frame and wheel when the sides of the rack are taken up by other bikes. So now my bike is locked up only with the cable. It’s in a covered area with security guards a few feet away so not the end of the world, but still..I HATE locking my bike up poorly.
You could use the U-Lock to create a frame lock. Not the most secure, but remember, you only have to be more secure than another bike the thief wants to steal.

Can you explain this more so I can visualize it better? Currently, the ULOCK is locking the back wheel to the frame, and the cable lock is going through the ulock, through the frame and front wheel, and through the bike rack. The u-lock wont fit through both the front wheel the fender, and the frame.
The current set up at least means you cant steal my bike just by removing the front wheel, but it would allow you to steal it by cutting the cable–the back wheel would still be locked to the frame though, so (ideally) less appealing that the bike parked by mine with just a cable and no ulock.
I am seriously counting on security being 20 feet from my bike to keep my bike safe BTW. I would NEVER lock my bike like this anywhere else in DC.

ParticipantThe u-lock should go around the rear wheel inside the rear triangle and lock to the rack. The cable should go from the u-lock through the front wheel. Can you make that work?

ParticipantBefore I started taking my bike into my office, I locked it up on the schoolyard-type rack outside. I had a long U-lock and a cable lock. If I removed the front wheel, I was able to get the U-lock around the rack’s bottom tube, through the rear wheel and around a chainstay. The cable lock was used to secure the front wheel to the back wheel and the rack.

Nope. That was the first thing I tried since thats usually how I lock my bike on racks, using the cable for the front wheel. The rack height is too short to fit my back wheel (or front wheel) far enough under the top beam of the rack to get the ulock through the frame. This was the case even before fenders though, hence always having to put the front wheel of the bike over the rack. Only really small bikes can fit their wheel under this rack.
I did try it again though just to see if it could work on Friday…and it wont. Its one of the dumber designed racks I’ve seen.

i’m hesitant to remove my front wheel of my commuter thanks to my disc brakes. It can take me 5-10 min to realign them so they don’t rub, and not sure I’d be able to get them properly aligned in the dark at night for my commute home. Its a good tip for when I cant fit my road bike on a rack though!
I may look for an extra long ulock, or one of those abus folding bike locks if I continue using this rack and not the uncovered one across the street. Someone with an xtra cycle uses one of the abus locks at work and it seems to work well and get their frame locked nicely. I just need an extra few inches and I could get the back wheel and frame locked up.

ParticipantIt was perversely fun riding past all of the cars stuck in this morning’s downtown traffic mess due to the barricaded streets. And, at least by the time I was rolling through, cyclists were allowed on the closed streets, making for an impromptu Open Streets event.

All morning I was marveling at what a beautiful fall morning it was and how lucky I was to be on a bike. Then, when I hit DC and passed all those poor people in their metal cages, I enjoyed it even more. Couldn’t figure out what was going on until I read this:
I love my commute!

Trying to get through Georgetown was a nightmarish lane-splitting mess. When I actually got to the barricades, it improved. I actually rode the wrong way down the middle of M Street for a couple of blocks, just because I could, and nobody blinked an eye. Crazy nutty morning!

ParticipantWell, considering it was inside my building, no amount of smugness in my ability to split lanes was going to help me today.

ParticipantThe smug was strong this morning, but after walking to Bibimbap for lunch and finding it closed the smug abated.

Ah, I knew there was a reason I had opted to ride the long way and avoid Georgetown!

ParticipantNice to be riding after a week off to nurse a sore post-crash body and too much work.
Smiling Pete in the office today!
