ParticipantWitnessed a first for me this AM: bicycle vs. squirrel on the Custis trail. Guy riding in front of me had no time to react after a squirrel darted directly into his path. Not quite sure if the squirrel went under his front tire or just collided with the side and got spun by his spokes. Either way the squirrel rolled a few times, righted itself, and scampered back off the path.
I’ve had a few close calls with squirrels in the past, but they’ve always turned and darted away at the last second. This squirrel just straight up went for it!

ParticipantWell, I was ridiculously overdressed. Luckily in layers, which ended up in the bag.

ParticipantI witnessed a cyclist on L Street get yelled at by a cabbie who told him to get out of traffic, to which the cyclist responded with the appropriate “I am traffic.” I wished the cabbie a nice day and offered a hug.

ParticipantWhat’s with all the dead rats on the MVT? I counted 3 on my way in today. Poor dead little ratties.

Some sort of protest against the mulch?

ParticipantThe weather was AWESOME this morning!
I noticed the first junky-looking Prius I think I’ve ever seen. The back/trunk door was dented (well, actually the metal was slightly torn vertically) with 2 strips of red duct tape “holding” it to the bottom of the window.
Also saw a construction mini loader (looked like this) crossing the Walter Reed/4MR intersection whose front tires kept bouncing at least a foot off the road as it headed toward the Walter Reed hill. Dude, it’s a little scary seeing you bouncing and nearly pulling a wheelie in that thing!

ParticipantI noticed some of the APD (Arlington*) staked out this morning on my commute. They were on S George Mason Dr just west of Columbus St (I was wondering why drivers weren’t just speeding down the hill) and on the south corner of the George Mason Dr/4MR road (apartment side) to watch for red light runners (people like to run those lights). I think they were in good spots to enforce lawful behavior.
I also encountered a male deer when I took the trail access from W&OD to Park Dr which was nice.
* now that I live in Alexandria whose police department ALSO has the abbreviation APD, I have to remember to differentiate

I’ve always seen Arlington’s finest referred to as ACPD and Alexandria’s as APD

Maybe they tried to eat it and it’s poisonous to them.
Or it’s just the poisonous cloud of hate emanating from cyclists traversing the mulch daily.

ParticipantRode for the first time in almost two weeks (because travel.) Was happy to find tires not deflated. Messed up and turned strava off (combo of the strava update, and my being away, I think) Ride was good passed FFG on the 4MRT. Forgot about the mulch so did airport thingie, was glad to see next construction section was finished. Took the sidewalk on Maine for first time in months, because sun was in my eyes heading SE – at first I thought about it because sun was in my eyes, then realized sun would be in the eyes of the trailing motor vehicle traffic, and I completely wimped out. I was inspired to be exquisitely polite to pedestrians on Eye and on NJ avenues SE.
Tonight my building is having a party to inaugurate the new bike room (well also the new game room and new business center, you didn’t seriously think they would do a party just for a bike room, did you) – I look forward to seeing how much of an improvement it is over the old one, and I kind of must be there, as the building’s leading transportation cyclist by far.

ParticipantMan what a beautiful morning!
One cyclist ahead me skipped the mulch path and simply rode down the Aviation Cir. -> GW parkway onramp to the MVT crosswalk. I didn’t want to risk some car suddenly showing up on the onramp so I went on the mulch instead. I was glad to be able ride on the newly moved MVT after getting off the mulch.

I flew by him yesterday. Yes, his headgear is notable.

Ignore it and it might go away.
