ParticipantI wrote the NPS park supervisor for the MVT regarding the big tree that fell across it between the bridges. Glad I missed that storm last night.

Indeed. I rode every day last week, but somehow managed to avoid every rainfall.
Yesterday, I had jury duty.

I rode in to the church to play a funeral today, and all I can say is I’m glad I have to put on vestments when I get to work, because although I brought a change of clothes with me…I forgot pants. Yep. Went to a funeral without pants. (I’m classy that way. :p ) My thanks to Rockford, who drove over with a pair of pants for me so I didn’t have to stay vested all afternoon.
It is posts like this that make it worthwhile to come catch up on forum reading. I’m so tempted to share this with my clergy friends.

ParticipantThis about sums it up.

TL: DR: people are awesome.
Thanks to everyone (ArlingtonRider, Dismal, Dread, Matt A, FastFriendlyGuy) who pitched in to help me this am, especially Matt Aune who made sure I got to work and is schlepping my broken wheel home with him this afternoon to drop off at Bikenetic. Another HUGE thanks to Matt’s friend Glenn who loaned me a wheel so I could keep riding. You all rock.

ParticipantMy morning commute was my last ever.
I mean, sort of. This is my last day at this job, so my last ride down to L’Enfant. I will not really miss this commute, or this job, but it was nice to be so close to Hains Point for morning sanity laps.

ParticipantOne day late, but yesterday morning, as I rolled into my garage I realized that I had not clipped out from the moment I got on in front of my house until then. Usually I have to stop only once or twice, but I believe that may have been the first time I made the entire trip without having to put my foot down even once. ftw.

ParticipantToday was my first commute back to work since the first week of April and the birth of our first child. I’m dreadfully out of shape…again. However it was so nice be back on the path. It’s the first time I’ve ridden up the CCT since the leaves opened up. It’s so beautiful, peaceful and quiet. With the exception of me panting, grunting and swearing…
So stinkin’ cute

ParticipantI stopped yesterday morning to chat to the people on Memorial Drive who wave the tour buses into Arlington Cemetery Visitor Center. I very nicely reminded them that they should really check behind them for traffic coming along Memorial from the cemetery before waving the left turners through. It was about the 10th time in the last two months that I had a tour bus waved through cutting me off when I had right of way because the “crossing guard” didn’t bother to check.
They seemed nice enough, but I’m not hopeful that there will be any lasting improvement. It is a bit maddening that by stationing people there in the road, NPS has actually made that stretch of road less safe than if there was no one at all.
Also annoying coming up from 110 that there’s now regularly a wall of buses in the middle of the lane so you can’t get across… heck you can’t even see if there’s any traffic coming the other way.

ParticipantThis morning’s ride was interesting because I elected to see how the Tern would do over a long(er) distance (longest previous ride? 6 miles. This ride? ~14) The answer? Fine, but definitely won’t be making it a regular thing. 20″ wheels don’t roll as fast as 700c, and I was working harder to maintain pace, which even with the greater effort, was slower than normal.
But I have to admit, it wasn’t terrible. In fact, it was pretty great, because it was a bike ride.

ParticipantGot on the bike, felt great for about 3 minutes. As I cruised onto Trollheim I noticed a gentleman adjusting his handlebars right before the dogleg… it just didn’t click. I went down just where he had a few minutes before. Amazing, years of commuting through that section well aware of the many forum members that have given blood and bone as an annual sacrifice and my number finally comes up. So it’s raspberry season on my body.. hip is pretty ugly…. wrist is really really sore! Still made it to Cafe Kindred though for some sympathy and awesome coffee. I hate wood!

Ouchie! Every time I read about one of these boardwalk instances I think, “there has got to be a better way.” Perhaps NPS should be looking to boat builders on how they keep their decks anti-slip.
On a separate but related note, I just bought some gritty anti-slip tape to apply to the tile floors in my entry way and kitchen. Have found out the hard way that non-rubber soles are very slippery on them. Apartment management isn’t gonna be happy when I move out but it’s worth it!

ParticipantCrossing TR Bridge this morning, there was an inbound Metro bus stopped in the center lane and a car stopped in front of it. A bike was hanging off the bus’ front rack. My biggest fear every time I do a mixed commute.

ParticipantPut a baby picture on the back of your id lanyard and wear it when you commute. If a driver ever wants to argue with you, showing him the baby picture usually stops them in their tracks. Works for me.
