That’s a good explanation and also totally ridiculous. If we’re talking 3am, sure. But if it’s still 44 at 8am then today’s low is 44.
I’m not sure that having an arbitrary cut off time somewhere in the middle of the night makes much more sense. Especially since, as you noticed, looking at the current temperature will give you a good idea of the current temperature. OTOH, if you were looking last night and saw a low of 35 and then saw that today’s low would be 50, you’d understand that tonight will be warmer than last night. (And would hopefully not think that meant that at midnight it would change from 35 to 50.)

ParticipantStill, when I went to bed last night, it said today’s low was 58 or something. When I woke up, it was significantly colder than that. When I went to work, after the sun was up, it was still 15 degrees below “today’s low”. But I see your point.

ParticipantThe rain held off and I enjoyed a lovely morning ride with a stop by FCC II to say hi and sample the cake Steve O brought (thanks!). Then after a harrowing experience riding around the mini-trench that’s on Clarendon Blvd, I had an interesting time on M St with some vehicles. One obliviously merged into my lane without signalling. Then a taxi un-obliviously merged into my lane a few inches behind me. The third vehicle was a guy in a Prius who saw it all and gave me some words of encouragement/sympathy when we were all stopped at the light (imagine that – no one made up any time with their maneuvers!) Then upon leaving the original FCC, I was inextricably drawn to experience the wet bricks outside Swing’s in a way I never had before.

ParticipantI was maybe 8th in line going through the IoD, but the first two were VERY cautious in descending to the TR Island parking lot, and there were people coming the other way, so no passing until the parking lot. It was kinda funny to see the swarm when we actually had space to pass.
Then I got to DC and on Virginia Ave was literally run off the road by some jackholes in a large truck. Luckily, there was space for me to pull over without incident. I called their company and actually spoke with a guy who kinda restored my faith in humanity. So all in all, good commute.

ParticipantMy morning commute was (blessedly) flat tire free. I snapped the head of my presta valve in half while inflating my back tire this AM, and was a little paranoid it would let air out on my ride over. It didn’t look like it was, so I rode in since it is soooo nice out today. My tire still seemed fully inflated when I got to work, so that’s a good sign.
Now I get to spend my lunch at Capitol Hill Bikes or City Bikes getting the tube replaced since I don’t trust myself with the IGH quite yet…Luckily the weather is perfect for a lunch ride!

ParticipantWhoa whoa whoa… as a west to east commuter, this morning’s real and measurable headwind was not ok with me. But you’d better stick around for my afternoon commute.

ParticipantOn the MVT between the WMATA bridge and the downstream highway span. A wild turkey! I turned around to get a picture but the turkey appears to have ducked into the brush. A first for me on the Virginia side of the river.
As I was stopped, several cyclists checked to make sure I was OK. Thanks!

Wait, have you seen a wild turkey on the DC side of the river?

Why yes, yes I have. A few years ago I was doing morning laps on Hains Point and saw a flock of wild turkeys between the Buckeye Drive turn and the golf course clubhouse.
The opportunity to stop and take in such things is probably one of the most underrated aspects of cycling.

ParticipantBig deal, I’ve had Wild Turkey on the trail many times.

ParticipantToday is the 1 year anniversary of my first morning bike commute! Funny thing is…the weather is IDENTICAL. Foggy, rainy, and dreary. And even though I’ve moved twice in the last year, the route was nearly identical since I ended up living 2 blocks from where my first commute started last year. So that was fun
I’d comment on how I’m way faster and stuff since last year, but I’m pretty much identical when on an upright bike
.

But of course you Absolute(ly) did not have that Wild Turkey with you at Hains Point on the final BAFS ride of the year, just the wild raccoon and foxes.

ParticipantIn order of appearance.
You – fellow fixie rider who hopped onto the Custis east-bound just before me from Abingdon around 0620.
Me – really enjoyed the pace.
You – lady in the sweet green Jeep heading up 17th near Constitution.
Me – really appreciated the quick friendly conversation and that you let me go first when the light changed. Pretty sure I also heard a “you go, boy” and that was just plain icing on the cake.
Y’all got my morning off to a great start. -
