Fearing ice on the Custis roller coaster this morning I took a different route, taking the W&OD to MVT and then north to the 14th St. bridge. Ran into quite a few patches of ice, some smooth and black, some rutted but still very slippery. Judging from last week’s posts on this thread, Custis might have been better.
The MVT from Four Mile Run to the 14th Street Bridge was almost completely clear this morning. A bit of snow on the northern side of the bridges and some puddles, but pretty easy riding. I was on slick 25s.

ParticipantThe temperature was glorious this morning, though I probably shouldn’t have skipped the shoe covers. All the warm weather cyclists were back, which is nice (I mean that sincerely – while sometimes I wish they’d get out of my way, we’re all safer when there are more of us). A lot of clueless drivers, even relative to normal. Maybe they were still expecting snow?
Some guy delivering something that will no doubt go right to the recycle bin was parked in the bike lane on Q NW, so I took the lane. He then proceeded to jaywalk in front of me. I went behind him and glared at him. He said something to me that I didn’t hear. I think it was, “Sir, some day could you teach me how to drive so I’m not such an inconsiderate jerk?”. Pretty sure that’s what he said.

ParticipantGlorious commute this morning. Wearing my summer fingerless gloves was a bit optimstic out the door, but beyond that a great ride into work.
On the plus side, ran into Vince leading a commuter train on the Custis, but I was going the other way!

ParticipantRode the fixie without studs, finally. It was deathly quiet.

Back on my fixie today, too. Quiet, yes—and fast!

ParticipantFinally! It was warm enough today to switch from my not-maternity and really-too-small-now ski jacket to my nice-and-roomy maternity coat. OMG it is so much more comfortable! If we have any more mornings under 35, me and Mother Nature are going to have to have a little talk.
Oh, and the monolith was at 280 when I went by. Seems to be back to normal.

ParticipantA glorious morning!
As a relative noob to the forum and to Arlington, nice to run into two forum and BAFS members today – saw Powerful Pete at the IOD (where APD was on scene doing enforcement). I didn’t actually know it was him at the time but Strava knows all.
Next I happened upon Arlingtonrider at Hains Point.
The only downside – now I am at work.

ParticipantTook the long way around (WOD to Shirlington->4MR->MVT->Rosslyn). Notwithstanding the NPS (non-)snow removal issues, I am envious of you people who get to ride up the MVT every day. That was nice.

It’s usually not nice at all until sometime after March 19th, so you should go via the most direct route from now until then.

Apologies Alcova for not asking you about your being on bikearlington! Was not in the best of moods after my morning work calls and not particularly social. It was nice riding with you!

ParticipantIt was great fun to come across and have a chance to ride and visit with three (!) #BAFS friends today in succession – first, alcova cyclist, then Mikey, then KarenW. It was wonderful to see all of you! You made my morning commute awesome.

I’m pretty sure I’ve given up until Spring. Two years ago the only thing keeping me from my bike commute was ice on the trails. Cold temps, rain, heavy rain – I rode through it all. Now I look at the temperature, say “meh” and head for the Metro.
To make things worse, now I have to find some form of like, exercise-type exercise to keep my gut from growing more out of control than it already has.
Finally got back on the bike today – it felt sooo good!
Not sure how I became such a weather wimp, but so it goes…

ParticipantWatch out, #BAFS teams. Consularrider and KayakCyndi were spotted heading westbound on FMR after the morning coffee convoys, and they looked like they were on a mission!
Update: Stand down. I was mistaken. No ride to Purcellville by those two today.

ParticipantI slept in this AM after SteveO keep me out late last night drinking beers, but I thwarted his conspiracy this morning to knock me and my BAFS Team 5 from the hunt in the leaderboard standings by taking in the long commute WOD -> 4MR -> MVT -> 14th Street Bridge -> HP laps -> 15th Street bike Lane uptown -> M Street bike Lane X-town. I did go back to dressing in 3 layers on my torso, leg warmers, and covers for my toes and helmet, as it was chilly.

ParticipantNew to area and trying to commute every day. My bidy does not do well in the cold due to back issues but managed to suck it up this morning to enjoy the afternoon weather
