ParticipantI’m pretty sure I’ve given up until Spring. Two years ago the only thing keeping me from my bike commute was ice on the trails. Cold temps, rain, heavy rain – I rode through it all. Now I look at the temperature, say “meh” and head for the Metro.
To make things worse, now I have to find some form of like, exercise-type exercise to keep my gut from growing more out of control than it already has.

ParticipantCommute into work this AM was… slower than usual. Walked the Spout Run overpass and a long bit of the Custis up to the bridge to nowhere and past the asphalt moguls. Four riders rode by me with consummate skill. I was impressed but continued walking on my 32mm slicks.
At least one guy (in shorts with no helmet) was on a fat bike, so he doesn’t count.
Still, better than working from home or taking the metro.

ParticipantThis morning I accepted that the MVT has won; the ice has beaten me. So instead, I had a pleasant ride around the back of the Pentagon by the memorial and up Washington Blvd trail to the Memorial Bridge. I successfully Blanche Duboised the crossings without having to pull out the puppy dog eyes, and made it into the city with out any ice to worry about. I rode down the mall along the reflecting pool jogger trail, and up and over the hill by the Washington Monument. I had a long chat with the geese blocking the trail near 15th and then up the mall to 4th and down to buzzard point without issue. In all a very enjoyable 6 miles. So maybe I have beaten the MVT ice by not letting my rage for it get the best of me?

ParticipantI rode with the family to enjoy international pancake day (free pancakes at IHOP until 10pm), which put me in Ballston. I choose to try the base, where my CAC card was waved through, and the best commute evar, which didn’t disappoint. Lovely commute all around.

ParticipantNicest morning commute in a very very long time. I’ll take 40 and rainy anytime at this point. Props to Dexshell waterproof socks. You rock and are less expensive than Sealskinz. The things I do to keep fenders off my bike.
5-8″ predicted in Fairfax tomorrow.. guess I’ll be WFH or driving the rest of the week…

Based on this winter’s patterns, a tropical rainstorm will wash the snow away by friday, and saturday will break record lows.

Participant…was bittersweet. Spring-like temperatures and the first time I could use the trails all the way to work in something like two weeks. But it will only last a day…

ParticipantBlissful. Thoroughly enjoyable. Especially knowing what’s coming tomorrow…
I believe that I am officially ready for spring to spring…

ParticipantWarm temperatures and rain will eliminate all the gray, dirty snow. Replacement, clean, white snow will be brought in afterward. Enjoy.

ParticipantI slogged through snow, overheated, then got a flat, overheated some more while pumping up the ridiculously high-volume tire, then got a thumbs-up from a driver as I continued on my way. What a blast.

ParticipantAny guesses as to what might be the least slippery time to ride home today, sans-studs?
I made intimate connection with the ice 3x this morning, and I’m hoping the return will be easier.
Here in the office I’m daydreaming of the sturdy little trike I rode when I was four….nice and close to the ground, nowhere to fall. I think a tiny trike with studded tires would be my perfect vehicle right now!

ParticipantI’d leave whilst the sun is still shining brightly, if possible.
I can’t imagine riding on slicks today, and if doing so, can’t imagine falling only 3 times. I hope there are no lasting effects. I hit the road hard once on the way to Java Shack. I forget which road it was, but it was snow/ice packed and someone decided they’d walk the dog off the leash, so of course the dog ran in front of me, I hit my brakes, and slammed down hard. The dog’s owner apologized profusely and I think sincerely, but still I was unable to let my internal editor keep from reminding her that there are leash laws.
